I've been wasting about half hour a day for the last week trying to figure out what "1 mb server" means, if someone really understands this PLEASE post wtf does it mean, so I won't feel so stupid anymore. Thanks.

Depends on your internet connection and your RAM.
If you have 2Mbit Broadband and 512 Ram, you can host aroun 15 - 20 players with very little lag. (works on both Mercenary navy servers anyway)

They say that a gig of RAM will host 30 lag free, but I cant vouch for this. The above is our server set ups and so I do know that they work.

Your UPLOAD is as important as download...............so it can be 10meg down, but if its only 100k up, u can have only 2 or 3 before lag monster kicks in.

Specify actual amounts, i take it roughly 512 down, so should get about 10-15 or so max.

so if my connection is 100 MBps (which it is) how do I know my upload and download speeds. I assume that 100 MBps is download. ?????

Mind not to make a confusion between your LAN speed and your Internet connection (or WAN) speed. Usually you have some router, modem or media convertor to connect to the Internet and the link between your computer and this device is 100 Mbps. The link from this device forward on is the one that matters. If unsure may it is always a good ideea to ask your ISP.

Anyway if your connection bandwidth is indeed 100 Mbps, you should divide it to 50 Kbps per player => 102400 / 50 = 2048 players, if you have the CPU and RAM for it

Anyone know the average upload/download rate client-side and server-side for FL? I know for Halo it's 8KBps upload and 35KBps download client side, and server side is calcuateable from that (yeah I made up a word :p)

Post Sun Mar 28, 2004 5:47 pm

ok, my connection is ADSL

upstream: 211 kbps
downstream: 1229 kbps

cpu: 2.0 Ghz
ram: 512 mb

about how many players should i be able to have? is there a general rule about how many players you can have based on your CPU, RAM, and up/down load speeds?

You can have at least 4 players with no lag. When more, depends on what they are doing, but you can start thinking about lag

I have almost the same connection speeds. I can support 8 players all in the same system fighting each other with virtually no lag.....
If they were all sitting still in the same system around 12
If they were all in different systems and figure about 10% docked.....you could go as many as somewhere in the 18 player range.....
