Help on network game

Hello, I was wondering if I can play Freelancer on our home network with my brother with only one copy of the game, or do I have to go and buy another Freelancer?

Thanks,
Dredd

this wouldn't happen to be scout 29, would? if not, then hi :-)

You mean to tell me that with all the crap busted around here, you start with the f[%&*ing ice machine?!?

Thank you for your reply. No, I'm not Scout 29.

I don't want you guys to think that I'm trying to rob Microsoft or Digital Anvil, I just would like an answer to my question. I just want to know if each individual player on a multiplayer game has to buy their own copy of Freelancer. Or is there an (legal) alternative? Can I buy another MP account number through Microsoft? Does the fact that both my brother and I are behind the same NAT router (and consequently the same outgoing IP address) make us have the same account number (therefore making all my effort pointless)?

Each PC you put the game on will have a unique ID
I think it only checks for the valid CD when you start the game, thgen you can pop it out & stick it in the other PC.

OK, I tried using the nocd patch. The game started up fine, but it will only let one of us join our server. When the other tries to connect it says that the account number is already in use on that server, so I'm assuming it's assigning both our systems the same ones. Could this be happening because I'm trying to play on my system that is already running the server? I checked what our MP account ID's are with the utility that comes with the game and they are identical. I also looked on the server log. The number listed for each of us is different than the account ID shown in the utility, but again we both have the same one.

Would reinstalling the game and hoping for a different number help?

Well, I'm surprised this thread isn't closed yet but I'll chip in.

Technically you should have a copy of FL for every computer. Originally software used to be like a book. You could make copies for archival purposes but only one person at a time could read it. Now M$ says you must have one piece of software per 'puter. What happens in reality is best left unsaid.

As for your MP ID delimma. Never heard of identical MP IDs on different computers. Nevertheless that is why you cannot play on the same server, you can't have two or more players use the same account on flserver at the same time! So they have to be different. How you do that is up to you...

I think you both have the same ID because you are both using the same IP address, so it probably uses an ID for each IP address

Did you have to create an ID on each computer or just one?

when i first went online with fl, i noticed that the puter assigned me a #. it also said that if a have an existing account, i could enter that instead...
couldn't you just use a different number?

Yeh, uninstall both games, then reinstall, and then when you go into the multiplayer thing, make sure you type in a different one for each computer
