Advice (some spoilers):-

If your on a standard (unmodded) server, you'll start with a Starflier! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHALLENGE SOMEBODY WHO IS OBVIOUSLY HIGHER THAN YOU! That is suicide!

Next, use your trading skills to raise money fast! I find the most cost-effective trade route is to buy Luxury Consumer Goods from Manhattan, and sell them on at Ainu Depot, Hokkaido. Then buy Cardamine, sell at Manhattan! Repeat, buy a Drone freighter from Kusari, and you're away! Once you've reached a couple of million credits or so (don't worry it doesn't take long) head to Omicron Theta, Freeport 9, and get a Corsair reputation hack, which will cost you no more than 150k. Take the Omicron Gamma Jump Hole in the South, and head to Planet Crete. Buy a Titan (or alternatively buy an Eagle from Freeport 9 while you were there), two Tizona del Cid pulse weapons, and four some Angelito Mk II or III (can't remeber which!) Take the Unknown Jump Hole in the north-east of the northern nebula, and destroy some Nomads, loot their Weapons, land on nearby Planet Primus (Shows up as a Samura base), repair your ship (if required), stock up on Nanobots and Shield Batteries, and then continue pummelling Nomads until you have enough firepower to take out a few Nomad patrols without having to use a Shield Battery.

Next head to Planet Crete in Omicron Gamma. Take a few high-paying missions (namely 245k missions) and just get rich! If and when you get bored of this, which happens often, message somebody in a nearby system using the Chat Window, and do missions together. You split the earnings, but the missions go a lot quicker, so in the long run, more hands make less work!

If this gets too boring, go back to trading, helping out noobs by giving them cash to escort you whilst trading, and the like. You will quickly become a well recognized player, who noobs will message for help.

Then if this gets too tedious, join a clan!

Excellent replies by Cardamine in starting in an MP game. But before you make the effort take some time to find a good server. I, in my own searches and veiwing my own server player levels, have noticed FL MP gamers are drawn mostly by the numbers. A close second is being drawn by the mod or non-mod of a server. Third is maximum player limit although experienced people know it's not the size, er, player limit but the bandwidth of the server. I have noticed non-PK servers are no longer much in vogue and PK servers is the biggest draw. If you do your homework and/or have friends out there in FL MP already, that will influence you as well. Other issues like server support, server forums, community, clans, ping time and any lag on the server can be influences as well.

Why do I bring this up? Well you could follow all of Cardamine's excellent advice to level up to a FL MP god but you may be stuck on a server in which you would not be happy with. A waste of time no doubt. So choose carefully! Of course you can't go wrong with MY server!

Matt

Well thanks to AkaTaka for this website, here's the link. That link shows a page that taps into the global server which has a complete list of all the FL servers that have logged into the global server at the time posted at the top of the page. It sometimes is far behind the current time but is a good indicator of what is up and when.

You can also go here. This list is of servers that use Cryogenius' excellent FLStats to post info about player characters from various servers. Not all servers are shown but it is a more detailed indication of who is doing what and where and when.

And of course you can keeping checking in here at these forums.

The link that Eardril posted to the Global Servers List has a) moved to here and b) got better! It now shows (almost) real-time status of the 65 servers listed...
