Hello

I'm sorry to say this, but I'm afraid it's because the speed of your modem...
I know people with ADSL/Cable connections who still experience lag. Playing Freelancer with a 56K modem is possible, but be prepared to bear loads of lag.

Also it could be because there are some Modders on the server you're playing on. EVERY mod, no matter how small or "innocent", causes lag because you're in a real-time environement with other players, whose comp have to keep track of the actions of the modded players too. Since the modders have altered lines of code who the other computers (non-modders) don't have, they need to request that data from the comp of the one who's using mod's. All this traffic will be send through the server-connection, eating up HUGE amouts of broadband. and that's exactly why EVERY MOD IS CHEATING when they're used on a server who doesn't SPECIFICALLY states that THAT mod, or modding in general, is allowed!

ehhh... ahum... back to topic:

there might be several things you could do:
1: find a server with the best ping possible (warning: ping only shows the speed of those packets that DO come through, it doesn't say a thing about how many information get lost along the way)
2: make sure the server DOESN'T allow mod's and have a strong policy of banning any rulebreakers on sight
3: find a server with some, but not too much players
4 (altough the most expensive one): get a better conn
