Multiplayer with a 56k connection.

Yo. Has anybody tried playing Freelancer online with a 56k connection? How is it? Response would be much appreciated.

I have - a loooong time ago. Surprisingly, FL is playable at those speeds. It's a little ****y at times, and unfair in PvP matches - makes you very hard to hit. If your just after the group missions and trade run experiences though, you'll go fine

You may also wanna try to find a server that pings as low as you can get.

Happy Flying dude.

one tip take missions where they are NOT sending ships to help you
it causes a lot more lag due to the increased number of ships

the general concensus seems to be only the person in question and those close to him but ive heard differing reports including seeing a server once list no 56k modems as a rule
my own opinion is only those flying with you experience any effects though i ditched my 56 k a few weeks ago i did use it for long enough to feel justified in this opinion

I'm running on 56K and to tell the truth, it's laggy as hell. I get constant on-off lag every secong and frequent connection dropouts...so I gave up. If on the other hand you really are that desperate, try to use missiles as they tend to track enemies much easier in laggy conditions.

There seems to be a LOT of factors:

1. The ISP. I dumped AOL and got Netzero and my ping went from 500 average to 300 just from that.

2. The location of the player Vs. the server. If not on the same continent expect extra lag.

3. The player's modem, settings, and phone line quality. Should see 49k connection at least.
.. (Hints: Try dialing other access #'s. There exists many freeware modem tweaking programs.)

4. Conditions on the server. Many people nearby in combat can cause lag, cheaters cause extra problems.

If all these issues are bad, yes the player can increase the server load, almost as much as a cloaker.
If they're NOT a problem (Good ISP, near server, tweaked settings/clean phone line, no cheaters on server)
then the 56k modem player will have NO more impact on the server load than any other player would.
