The idea behind it is so that the more squares you have the higher on the list your server is, altho some people order the list to server's they have visited and so on. Others just look for well known servers, so unless your a very new server its not really necessary.

The way to get your server noticed is by offering fun things to do on it, like what happened on Browclops. On Elite Stinger has organised fireworks displays and the like which are neat. Just fun things will bring the crowds which (usually) makes a server a great place to play.

I'm pretty sure I covered your reason as to why squares are there (even tho you didnt ask it) but as to how you get them there, I haven't a clue.
