Mods in Multiplayer

I have just started playing on the multiplayer servers and come across mods. Can I use mods in these multiplayer games? How will they affect the game - will I be able to buy custom ships or do the mods have to be implemented at the server?
Cheers.

If the server doesnt have a mod that you have enabled, then you will lag and possibly crash the server. So dont use them, unless the server say's it does have them.

Either by its name, news section, or the version listed. Anything not version 1 in the server browser is a Modded server, usually with a Total conversion mod.

Mods???
You can use your mods on SERVERS that allow mods And belive me there is no fun in this. Other way if you ever get tired of plain normal FreeLancer then you can Play system wide mods on (again)SERVERS that support them.

Using mods on non-mod allowing servers is ignorant, selfish, and hence quite popular.
