A squirrel killed my Eagle... Admins, help!

Read this if you like laughing at the misfortune of others.

Yesterday morning a squirrel got itself fried in my neighborhood's power system, causing a power spike then outage, which corrupted my hard drive sufficiently that I had to fdisk it and reinstall everything. Guess where I stored the Freelancer ID number for my multiplayer accounts? That's right, on my computer! Now I can't access my Rank 64 account on Elite with 100+ hrs of play. All this from a squirrel. Gaaaaaarrrgghhh!!!

I don't suppose there is any way for the server admins on Elite to find my account in their list and give me the number?

Sheesh. That sux. The only way you can get your account ID is by asking the server admin to send it to you, and I doubt they will.

i had a similar incident (the hd part not the squirrel) and i'm afraid we're both out of luck. had over 100 hours on that character too

Well it is too late now, but your first mistake was reformatting the hard drive. I would have installed another drive and put an operating system on that and slaved the one that crashed. You may have been able to access the crashed hard drive that way. I have done this in the past after a nasty crash that left my drive unaccessable. I have two drives installed and a 20 gig backup that is not connected. It has an OS installed just in case my main drive gets messed up.

I had planned to set something like that up but hadn't yet. "Life is what happens when you're making other plans," they say.

Sorry to hear your misfortune, and backing up your MP account number is a must in freelancer, but for all you guys asking on occasions for the server admin to supply your account number: THEY DONT HAVE IT.
Account id's are generated from your id combined with a server id, Thats as simple a i can put it in laymens terms.
as a precaution against this here is what i suggest
1) right down or print your mp account number
2)once you have your freelancer installed with your new/old account number, export the registary entry that provides your account number.
3) when you have to install freelancer again just double click the the exported .reg file.
Voila.
the reg key is found here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Microsoft Games/Freelancer/1.0
Highlight the "InstallKey" and click file and then export, name it whatever you wish and save it to floppy or a cd whichever you have.
When you need to reinstall Freelancer and want your old account just insert the floppy or wherever you saved the file, and double click it, then click ok.
You will find all is as it should be.
But asking server admins is a waste of their time and yours.
Regards
WT

ROFL

Post Sat Jun 28, 2003 2:14 am

You live in Quebec? I hear even the squirrels drink beer there... rofl.

Nope, I live in Tucson, AZ... a 32,000 acre forest fire here has made the squirrels militant, and they throw themselves into our power grid in an attempt to paralyze our civilization in preparation for their invasion. Where's my shotgun...

there arnt any squirrels in tuson. You want to see squirrels? come down to orlando, find me, lets look in my back yard. We got a city of squirrels. Any they are smart too, they know if they do anything i dont like, kabam. I use a neighbors gun to shoot em.

Why didn't you have a UPS or at least a surge protector on your expensive, invaluable equipment?

In case you're wondering I work for APC and trust me, our products work.

sure sure your products work, just like microsoft didnt transform the moon into the death star.

so that's where that big crater came from...

Heh. I have a surge protector, maybe that's why my hardware wasn't permanently damaged. I'm already shopping for a UPS.

Maybe I should swear vengeance on squirrelkind and create a Death to Squirrels faction (DTS)... Nah...that squirrel has already paid the price. Plus there aren't any squirrels in Sirius. So hunting them would be stupid. Uhhhh...yeah.

I could hunt Gaians, though...

As soon as Elite comes back up and allows account creation I'm restarting from scratch... should be fun.
