Can you play MP behind a router?

I'm porbably going to get Freelancer soon, and was wondering if you can play MP behind a router.

Also do you like the MP or SP better?

Thanks

Yes you can play MP behind a router. You may have to forward a few ports tho. Also i have heard about software firewalls (usually bundled with routers) causing problems so you may need to switch that off.

SP is good to get you into the game, hone your skills a bit. But it has a fairly short playtime. Once you've completed the story you've got 20-40 hrs max before you're totally bored. Although this can be greatly extended by soem of the mods on offer.

MP is better once you are tired of SP. You've gotta be pretty competent to survive at all and it is abotu 100x harder fighting decent humans instead of AI. The opportunities for co-op ing etc mean you can get totally hooked on MP - theres always soemthing to prove

Yes, I play from behind a Belkin router (and ZoneAlarm Pro firewall), neither have caused me any problems at all.

I'll help you out more tho...if you will post the brand and model of your router for me, I'll look up some info and tell you if it's totally compatible, or if you'll have to open up certain ports to do so (including which ports to open and how).

How about a workgroup hub? I chose that over a router.

Thx

The next time someone asks if you're a god, say YES!

You'll be fine, then. The first time I played Freelancer was at a friends house, who just happens to be running a Linksys wireless system No hitches, hiccups or burps (unless someone else happens to want to play Everquest...Freelancer runs fine, EQ does NOT play well with it tho).

Yes, it will work fine over a router. Some NAT routers need the DirectPlay ports opening or forwarding to the machine on which you want to play the game but most decent domestic routers are designed to cope with this kind of application and won't need any config.

SP is a good intro and lets you learn the game in a "safe" environment and you might enjoy the missions and storyline. Once you've completed them it gets boring very quickly tho. I much prefer MP - it's still not entirely open ended but the human interaction makes it more interesting.
