FL Deathmatch

O.k. to start with i admit 99% of my MP experience has been limited to LAN and at that not very much (i'm hoping to have more time over the next few weeks so look out for my puny starflier at a server near you soon ) Feel free to tell me this is a totally crap idea - i wont be offended.

I have been reading with alot of interest all the clan wars/clan council posts which are a bit like a sweet soap opera set in FL. I have also been reading alot of 'i could kick your titans ass in my banshee' type posts. So why not have a semi official way to settle these debates. I dont know if the clan wars are still making ELITE a nightmare but i know people were looking for ways round them. How about an honourable duel or counterstrike team battle to settle things?

Here are some ideas :

1. Both parties agree on who is to fight and when. I.e. 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 etc. Possibly a dueling arena could be designated (somewhere NPC's arent gonna get involved) to simplify things. To spice things up there should be credits involved either equal numbers or if its a LF vs a VHF possibly the VHF guy would agree to bet more. This would require a referee...

2. Referees for deathmatches. Say the head of an independant clan, a TLR moderator or anyone both parties trust. The referee should take a small cut of the total bet (5%?) this will encourage people to be good referees. Both parties and the referee agree on time place and whos fighting. Both parties then transfer their side of the bet to the ref. The ref oversees the fight and pays out to the last man standing (minus their cut of course ).

To add further interest the ref (or enterprising spectators) could offer odds, like a space based bookies. People could gather to watch and collect their winnings. One obious problem is refs/bookies nicking the cash. The refs cut will partly counter this but somewhere to keep a record of good refs/bookies seems a good idea. A stiky post here would do with people announcing deatmatches before hand (will make squabling over amounts etc less likely) saying how much is at stake and who is refing it. The ref would the post a post-match report on who won. Fighters could also recommend good refs and blacklist bad ones. Bookies could also post odds for upcoming fights.

Here are some examples (to avoid offending anyone i'm using red dwarf names) :

One on One :
Lister has been boasting about how he can kick anyones ass one on one in his banshee. Rimmer flies and eagle and thinks this is a joke so challenges him to a deathmatch. He is co confident he offers to put up a million credits for Listers 500,000. They approach the head of clan dwarf ([DwarfHolly) to ref. They agree to fight in sector D4 Colorado at 11.00 CET. Holly posts on the sticky the time and location of the fight aswell as who is fighting and how much is at stake - bokkies are free to offer odds. At 10.55 the three ships meet up in the appointed sector. Lister pays [DwarfHolly 500,000 credits and Rimmer pays him 1,000,000. At 11.00 Holly gives the start signal.
In the end Lister outfights RImmer and he is defeated. Upon seeing his death Holly pays Lister 1,425,000 (1,500,000 minus his 5% cut). Holly then posts the result and the winner. Bokkies note the result with interest for calculating future odds...

Clan War :
Clan [Dwarf and clan [Simulant have been at war for weeks. No one remembers how it started but everyone is getting fed up. They agree to a truce after a 3 on 3 deathmatch to decide who has won. Again the approach a ref, who posts details and takes stakes (much bigger stakes obviously ). Ref awards the loot, minus his cut, to the last clan standing and posts the results. Both clans are very mature and stick to their truce although the losing clan spends the next week practicing their skills by fighting nomads in starfliers and plots their revenge...

I know its probably far too complicated but if it worked i think it could be totally sweet. Anyone else?

Referees in battleships might be a nice idea. That way no chance of them getting mixed up in the fight, or killed by crossfire. Since they'd only be required to referee matches they wouldnt need to use the battleship outside of that role. They could easily transfer their cut of the battle to another character.

Best place to duel I have found is by the alaska Jumpgate. Nice and open and the mines take care of any interloping NPCs.
