stoopid nooby question

when you play on a MP server and build a character up to a certain level, can you take that character to another multiplayer server and start up and go with him at the same level?
I ask this because I've been reading posts on this board and it appears that several people have very high level characters on many servers. Is this because characters are "portable" or do these guys just spend loads of time developing characters accross several servers. OR is there a fast way to build characters.

Characters are not portable to other servers. We make our characters fresh on each one.

it doesn't take long to level up if you know the trade routes ...

Well as for "fast build", I started on Seattle 24/7 server..but with the problems I switched to Elite. Rebuilding was quick, and with some help Ive aquired an eagle and a good bankroll. Key for alot of players who expand across many servers is either lots of time..or a community, clan, friends to help. I few million is quick to make when ya have an eagle with lvl 10 guns..so outfitting yer friends, clan, community only requires one player to settle one server for the rest to quickly expand.
