Im extreamly positive that if you get all your factions = to the way the faction you want you WILL get there tag next to your name... If you wanna be Outcast make sure you have all there enemies RED and all there allies GREEN... It dont matter if you have other factions green or red tho... I was on a server that had a fast RED on the killing... Liker if I killed navy for like 5 mins I could get them max RED... Now I had the navy MAX red but I was still afiliated with them and had the navy tag next to my name.. Becuz I hadent killed enough to get the rouges and so on green.. Thjey were still red and I had all the same enemies as the navy... See the navy doesnt have the navy as an allie or enemie so it wouyldnt effect my ststus with them ;p

I am maxed with bad rep with samura yet i got a samura tag; why? its broken :p

In the manual screenshot everyone had the 'Interspace' tag on them...

I've been told that my Rhino character has Bowex in front of it, but it was only neutral - mildly friendly on my list.

any tag other than navey that is next to your name is a bug, it happens sometimes when you load up. To fix it just reload your char

There was once after slaughtering many Nomads for a whole day, I came out back to planet Malta (or Crete) can't remember. Met up with a friend and he tells me that I have NOMAD next to my name!

It didn't last tho. But was cool while it lasted.

i have the key to your problems i think when your doing a mission for a certain faction your name will appear to be that faction your working for i may be wrong but i think i'm half way there

A friend of mine who flys a sabre he got from vogtland has no tag. i fly an eagle and have no tag. another guy flys a dragon, navy tag. another, barracuda, no tag. humpback, navy tag. i've always simply assumed navy was a tag assigned to a newer player on the server... but something tells me it's just a torture device for fans :-p

I've seen multiple tags on various servers, people having tags from numerous different factions, I support the general theory that the whole tag idea is bugged, as it seems to bear no resemblence to your rankings to each faction (after asking people how they got their tags).

Possibly it was going to be a major part of online play, joining factions and fighting others, but it was decided against because of deadlines or programming problems or simply because the idea wouldn't work properly (too restrictive to players?), so the coding for it was never finished, but since it has no effect on the game it was simply left in to save the effort of removing it.

Just an idea.

I dont believe its in any way "buggered" if you test it out you wil find, it represents the faction that you are aligned to when you first fly out on an MP server. For example, the default is "Navy" when you launch from manhatten, but if the ini file is edited (and I have tested this) launching new players from malta often but not always gives them the tag "Outcasts" but this is the only faction I can find that works, I have tested others but only the major starting points, Manhatten, New Berlin, New Tokyo, and New London give these faction names.

Its also possible to cancel them out, using a clan style prefix for your name in the format:
mn - admiral nazbit, the mn will override the navy, but it must be in exactly that format, other characters keep navy there and give you a name as long as this post

The trick to getting a faction tag by your name is that the factin that you want has to be the most friendly. All other factions need to be neutral. I believe if you have only one friendly you will aquire that tag and you will maintain that tag until you go neutral with that faction.
It is very easy to get any faction by editing. simply set all factions to 0 (totally neutral) and then move the faction you want to .9 (friendly). The next time you log on you should have the appropiate faction tag.
