Sorry bud, no clue. But what I do when i'm fighting is i have my torps and missles off. Then i assign a hot key for them that's fairly close to my normal hand position on my keyboard. That way i can launch them at the perfect time (ie. when i think the guy's shields are going to be down). I know it doesn't answer your question exactly, but it's another idea.

Well i managed to figure it out. But there seems to be a bug. The grouping only lasts as long as you are in the air. Even then getting them grouped is a bear to do. I wanted to contact MS about this so they could get a fix for it, but what do ya know, no real way to contact them. I'm going to try to contact Digital Anvil. Hope they can get it fixed cause when defending FP9 i don't have time to re group all my weaps each time i undock.

My groupings usually last for quite a while, but I havent been able to make them by hitting assign weapon group. What I do is I have it select weapon group one, and it will be empty, so i turn on the weapons in that group. Then i go to weapon group 3 (2 wont work for some reason), and it will have the same guns i selected for the first group, but i unclick those and turn on the others i want. Voila, weapon groups that last even after youve logged off until you manually click or unclick weapons.
