alpha centauri - 66.150.31.84 is online

Hello All, New Dedicated Server is up for all to enjoy. Right now, it is open to all, set to 128 players while we (gaminhost.com) are testing how much cpu/memory/bandwidth it takes. Server is dual AMD MP 1900 with 2 gigs Memory, so the experience should be smooth.

If the server is down, it will be restarted as soon as we are notified of it's down status, please use [email protected] to let us know that the server is down, with Alpha Centauri in the message header so we know what server to take action on.

We are looking for a server admin or 2 (possibly a clan, as we need someone(s) that can regulate the server.

Server is free to all to play on, we only ask a few things that will help us to keep this server up for a long time to come.

- PK'ing the new players - Please try to allow the newbies to get some experience up before you go on a rampage. Liberty is designated as a no-fire zone.

- Folks that want to cheat will be banned permanently, the server is here to enjoy the game, not abuse it

- Please give feedback, particularly if you are having any problems on the server. **NOTE** we have the server set to 128 players to see what the maximum limit is going to look like. When emailing an admin ([email protected]), please include the amount of players logged in and the time in EST format

- While in-game politics are fine, please refrain from bringing "real world" politics into the game.

- Racial and other types of discrimination will not be tolerated and will result in a ban permanently, no questions asked

- Above all, have fun and enjoy. The server is being offered as a service to the gaming community with no strings attached.

We also might offer the ability to host other servers once we complete testing and see how she runs.

Thanks for your time, see you in the universe!

Awesome, sounds like a great server. When my game comes (should arrive tomorrow via UPS) I'll definitely check it out. Me and a handful of my friends are starting a clan, so we'd probably be interested in the admin thing. If you're still looking for one, contact me and we can get some details sorted out! And, if not, well I look forward to playing on your server. The specs on that server case are enough to make me drool. What kind of connection are you using to run it, out of curiousity?

Looks like we possibly have a clan to admin the server, stay tuned for more details on that.

I was on it tonight with about 20 players on - lag started to get really bad in-game. You might want to find a way to smooth it out. I mean, it was so bad that enemy ships were flying backwards....red connections all around!

Great server though...I was there since the demo server was up. If you need an adminI'd volunteer as I play there as my primary server.

I luv this server (if such an interaction between man and manchine is possible).

I wish the player limit was lowered. So far the server seems fine until you get 30 people. Problems appear. 40 and 50 is just flat out wrongness. Thankfully, I'm a trader so lag issues are less important since I'm not inolved in combat that often.

The only other problem I'm seeing is server crashes which seem to occur whenever the load is upwards of 40 people.

Hey All, couple of updates.

The server seems to actually "grow" laggy over time, crashing right at about 4-6 hours every time. The lag meter on the server gets pegged at red regardless of player count at that time which is a little odd.

Hardware wise, the cpu's report 50% utilization at around 40, disks and memory seem fine, so I think perhaps (and the error message confirms) that over time, the server throws enough errors internally that it finally fatal exceptions.

I'm going to lower the count to 36 and see if it runs any longer (to eliminate the possibility of player count being a factor). If it holds steady there, then we'll just add a second server to the mix.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if sharing the server's vault would allow the same players to log into one server, quit, and then log into the other and still keep their stats? I know this is how we run our NWN persistant world, just curious if this had been tried for FL yet.

Keep the feedback coming, you can mail me off forums if you have any suggestions or ideas to keep her running more consistantly.

Just to give you an update: the server (now with 40 players max) was not much better than before. Lag was incredible, with chat messages taking more than 1 second to even show on screen. Ships in formation will magically jumped 10 km ahead of you with no warning then will be behind you when you actually try to figure out what's going on.

I witnessed at least 5 PK's on level 1 players at Manhattan by lvl 38 players as well. There needs to be a crackdown on the rules before it gets out of hand since some high levelers are taking advantage of new players.

hope this helps.
