Help/MP red connect icon and drop soon after join?

Whenever I try to connect to an internet MP game, I see the red connection warning flashing in the upper left, and not long after joining I am disconnected from the game.

Comcast 1500/256 connection, behind a hardware firewall, ports 2300-2400 enabled, w2k, 2gigs ram, athlon xp 2200+ cpu. I run the game at 1600x1200@32 and have everything else turned up.

Help?

Is this when trying to connect to just one server or have you tried several? Also, on the server selection screen, what is the average ping number?

Several servers, avg ping was 42 up to 120.

I also attempted reducing all the sound and graphics to see if maybe it had to do with some sort of update packet size. No luck there either.
