Doing missions and trading always works for me

My suggestion is...do not attack the rogues. Do a couple of quick runs Water to pittsburg....boron to new york. Then buy some better guns and upgrade to a patriot. Head north to the colorado jumpoint north of manhattan and simply nail xenos until the rogues go neutral to you. When they do..go to rochester base nearby. Then travel to the badlands and follow the patrol routes to where they intersect at buffalo base. (rogue) Land there...there is one commodity there that it brought to rochester is VERY profitable.
Once you make 17,000 credits you can purchase a dagger at buffalo or a liberty defender on the LBS (Liberty Battleship) Missouri and venture out-system. If the rogues are neutral to you then the lane hackers and outcasts will likely be as well...thus you can travel to magellan and cortez freely and if you feel fit for it you can probably get all the way to omicron alpha.. If you get attacked there you're dead, but you probably won't and the trade routes there will get you into a sabre in no time at all. Have fun.
