What does the growing red circle indicate?

Hi all,

I just got the game and was wondering what the growing red circle is that appears around my ship. Is this an enemy lock-on indicator meaning I drop a flare, or does it mean something else? I've had a quick look through the manual and can't find it. Any ideas?

The red circle that sometimes appears around your ship is actually divided into four quadrants, and they appear when you're hit by something.

If the whole circle appears, it means someone is firing at you (and hitting you!) from your six (directly behind you). Left means from the left, bottom means from below, right meas right, and top means from above. If two sections light up, say, left and top, it means you're taking fire from above and to the left. If the right and left section light up, it means you're taking fire from two different fighters.

When engaging multiple opponents, its not uncommon to see the whole circle quite a lot, since you're taking fire from every angle as you chase down one target.
