Ever See A Server With +30 Players?

I haven't, although I'm curious if any others here have. Although it might sound a bit looney, surely there must be at least one server in the world which looked at all the others and said, hmph, I can provide for MORE then 30 players! Without lagging, it quickly adds. Although I've never seen such a thing ... sometimes, I see servers that have /64 or even /128. I join, hoping. Unfortunately, in every case when it neared 40 players the red icon was unescapable. Does the bandwidth requirements scale up exponentially? The software leaks? Related to processing?

for 32+ players my guess is you need to be at least to on a LAN to play flawlessly.

The Elite Server that TLR runs has about 30 people on it at a time...it's been upwards of 60 something possible back in the beta times...but like you say that number of people on a server would make for some problems...

The CinciHighSpeed.net server has 32 players, and reportely runs at about 50% CPU usage on a P4 3.06Ghz.

The problem is not the bandwidth or that the admin doesn't want too many players... at this point in time, the server is too CPU consuming and rather unstable. The rampant cheating and subsequent character corruptions don't help, either.

Thanks for the info RunorDie! On a related note, are games which are released that have large performance needs (ie, Global Ops MP) able to be 'scaled down' through patches, or are such problems usually a consistent problem due to the simple way the code in the game was created?

I'm also curious if anyone knows how much bandwidth a player takes up? Do 30 players fill a T1 nicely (192KB/sec, or something like 6.4KB/sec per player) or there's room to spare if not for lack of computing power?

Coda A27:

There was a thread a week or so ago regarding the actual bandwidth usage FL players take up. I thought I had it bookmarked but I don't, although you could do some searching.

The bottom line was the lag and stability issues in MP FL have little to do with bandwidth. The player traffic doesn't take up that much. It's the server requirements that scale up tremendously depending on if you have over 25 players.

I've never played on a server with more than 30 players that isn't constantly jittery and lagging... and those servers show up with a 30 ping in the server browser!
