Escape pods

I'm bringing this up to explain it better and with a picture to see if it helps.

the whit lines would be destructible SURs that could bet blown off. the red is the escape pod which would stay behind. You would end up flying an escape pod with floating weapons unless you made them blow off. Pretty neat, but everyone would just load an autosave since you would lose everything.

That's interesting. What have you managed to do with it so far?

From a wild guess, an escape pod would have to be part
of the "root_health_proxy" of a ship. In that way, you're left flying the escape pod although your ship is destroyed.

Yes, exactly. I haven't done anything for it, I'm doing a FIRST robotics thing, we have regionals this weekend so i have to have up before 5.

well the escape pod would blow up just like the rest of the ship

best you make a single escape pod... just one model of it
but a mount hardpoint on it
and attach the original ship to it

Yes and i also saw in ini file (engine_equip.ini) that there is a escape_pod_engine.

That's just a commodity, not an actual ship.

Something I've thought of a few times would probably take some serious editing.
Where the player is contained in a separate/jettisonable piece of the ship.
The cockpit would be ideally suited for this purpose. The only problem with current cockpits is that they are seen only from the "inside" view. The outside view is "transparent" to the game engine due to it's vertices orientation.
Such a cockpit would have to have an external structure that could be seen and incorporated as part of the cockpit itself.
A few things have to happen for this to work.
1. your ship takes enough damage to become disabled...
(to force an auto eject or the pilot elects to eject)
2. Once ejected, the pilot should be able to fly the escape pod away leaving the disabled/pilotless ship behind and "dead in space" .

3. I think this would require something that the current game engine is not capable of supporting at present.

Currently, when your ship is blown up, you die and get to respawn at your last location. So, you would have to figure out a "workaround" so that you end up with a lifeboat instead of dieing when your ship is destroyed.
This would present another possible problem. Maybe not too difficult but it has to be figured in. Suppose your ship is blown up and your left in a life boat. Now, you have to fly your lifeboat to a planet where you have to purchase a new ship and re-equip it all over again. This might mean you'll have to travel back in your lifeboat to the last place you bought your last ship. If NPC's are hostile to you to begin with where your ship was initially destroyed, well they're going to be shooting at you the whole time while you're trying to make your escape.
IF the lifeboat isn't armored enough to take the pounding by the NPC's, you'll end up dieing anyway and respawning back where you started in your original ship again.
So, the lifeboat would have to have be nearly indestructable to pull this off.

It seems like a very good idea, but is it worth it? In some ways, I think so.
That aspect comes with it's own type of death penalty and forces the player to go to a base to get a new ship at the players cost and probably short of kissing a star or planet...keeps them from respawning (as long as the lifeboat is indestructable)
