Hailing other ships...

Is this really of ANY use????
As i see it, the game has no option to contact and ask for help, or to ask for wingmen to protect you in a trade or to ask for journey together to reach the same destination.
So why is there a hail option???
I can understand that a scanning option would give you idea of what a ship carries if you wanna attack it (if you're a pirate) but what is hail good for???
And does anyone know if there are other ways (besides the hail) that i might acquire wingmen or get together with a bunch of ships to travel to the same location (besides just waiting for a group and then fallowing them or joining a formation with them.

any hints are appreciated!

I tend to use hail for the following reasons:

Finding locations of bases/jumpholes... You hail some friendly (pirate group) who say they're heading to (pirate base), hit F4, and it's all good.

If I feel like getting into character and helping some of whatever group on patrol... Like if the Navy Defender says they have so many more waypoints, I group up and help them kill stuff.

Uh... To get them annoyed? Really, I only use it for the first one, and not even that anymore. Too bad you can't actually respond.

Scan is also useful to gauge the types of weapons/shields used in a particular system (like when you go to Bretonia, let's say) and adjust equipment accordingly. I hardly ever use it for pirating.
