Yes, possibly the weapon/equipment hardpoints. Places for your weapons/thrusters/countermeasure droppers/etc to connect at.

It may be a shield generator. It seems to have no function.

Yeah, every ship has one by default. I think it's supposed to be either your sensor system, communications array, or like someone else said, a shield generator. A simple test might be to dismount your shield and then see if it still shows up.

Looks to be the shield generator. I checked it last night, and dismounting the shield removed the hex thing. I'm kind of dissapointed. There's numerous types of shields, yet the generators all look exactly the same. It reminds me of another pet peeve - all the turrets are exactly the same, regardless of weapon type. How come the fixed mounted weapons vary, but the turrets don't? I was hoping to see stuff like gattling guns or duo-cannons. : \

Not only do the turrets look the same, theyr'e ugly too btw i think that the models for the shieldgenerator and the afterburner look a little bit too alike (ugly too )

I would say shield generator - the level 10 Brig HF shield makes little polygons of the same shape appear as you take damage.
