offhand, I'd guess that you'd want to go pick up a fighter. The Defender H.F. is available from battleships, otherwise go get a patriot.

On a related note, has anyone run the entire SP storyline in freighters? That strikes me as an interesting (in the masochistic way) challenge.

Are fighters and freighters the same speed? I look for higher shielding and storage. What is your decision point for a ship? thanks

The straight line speed is the same. However, fighters are more maneuverable and might have better accel (has someone actually checked that?). They also can generally mount more non-turret weapons and a CD/T slot.

In general, I found the mid-level freighters (Bretonia/Kusari) to be good for most missions (loading 2 catapult missiles and a bunch of turrets). Ship choice depends on what I'm trying to do. If you're interested, I just finished my first run through and I used (in order) the Starflier, Defender, Clydesdale, Drone, Dragon, and Anubis for the SP.
