Here's my current trade route. Be warned, if you don't have the right faction standings (which I don't,) it's not for the faint of heart.
Cardiff Station, Cambridge -> The Ring, New Berlin: Beryllium
Planet New Berlin, New Berlin -> Planet Cambridge, Cambridge: Engine Components
(Actually, I'm not sure if you get the Engine Comps at New Berlin or the Ring. If it's not at the one, try the other. I spent too much time at both to keep it clear in my head. )
Each run nets you a profit of over 1000 credits per cargo unit, making it more profitable than the New Berlin->New Tokyo route, while containing about the same number of waypoints.
Where things can get hairy is if you don't have faction with either the Hessians or Corsairs. You'll pass through two Omega systems, and visibility is poor through much of it. If you get ambushed, you might have trouble finding the trade gates, especially while being beaten on by mobs of enemies in cruise disrupting heavy fighters. Still, I managed to plow through without too much hassle, so I'm sure you can too.
