The French

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

France was probably part of the coalition.

France was part of the Alliance.

It depends on which storyline you go with. Someone or other said that in one version, 5 of 8 ships made it out, the rest being destroyed. In that case, the destroyed people could sensibly be, I dunno, the French, the Italians, and the oddsorts.

However, there are French names in some of the other factions, so I'd assume they were in Liberty, Bretonia, Hispania, Rheinland or a combination thereof.

The French, South Africans, Australians, Canadians, Italians and a few others were all in the Alliance in Starlancer (the Coallition being Russian, East European, Chinese, and "Middle East", broadly interpreted I think) from what I've been able to sort through on the Starlancer part of this site. However, the fictional world has undergone a few changes - for example, the destruction of Sol has been cut. I definately hope for an expansion involving the Sol/Coallition, and probobly the Nomads too since they were only moved away in FL. Although fighting the Nomads was intensely annoying. If only they'd allowed a few more levels of shields and guns it could have been a straighter fight, with less terrified flying around in circles waiting for "shield restored."

The inclusion of nationalities in a space game was a clever, if not entirely uncontroversial move for DA. Adds a fun touch for people with affinities. At the moment I'm torn because I don't want to be enemies with all kinds of factions I have soft spots for because of history or the SP storyline.

I was very impressed with the decision to mirror the real world in the "nationalities" of the various empires... it gives the space world a familiar feel that your character, Trent, would have.. plus it made me smile to find out that Trent is from Leeds, which is pretty close to where the game was partially coded

Starlancer's echoes of the 2nd world war were impressive as well, tho I dislike the degree to which the nationalities are stereotyped... "Ja, I am a German, so obviously warmongering and rude" etc... but overall I think its forgivable as ALL races are afflicted with similar stereotyping, and it all evens out...

Cheers

The French and Italian Fleets were destroyed completely right before Starlancer started. The Coalition made a surprise attack and destroyed the two fleets. You guys remember "Frenchie" from Starlancer? He joined up in the volunteer squadron and flew with you hoping to avenge the loss of the French fleet. I am guessing that France and Italy were overwhelmed by the Russians and were not able to build sleeper ships. But French refugees probably escaped aboard the sleeper ships (yep, there we go again saving the French again).

Freelancer is based on the starlancer universe

at the start of starlancer you see a small coaltion fleet arrive to sign a peace treaty with the alliance

the french and italian fleets are charged with the honour duty

then you see the entire coaltion fleet decloak and destroy the 2 fleets there, they then jump on the british fleet which barely makes it out alive

the american, german and japanesse fleets where conducting manouevers around neptune (IIRC)

the first couple of missions are the alliance fleets meeting up and forming a defensive line to hold the coalition at bay the game plays from there

also I dont remember the spanish fleet in starlancer but I'm sure they are about

Yep, the honor guard. Thats right! Hell, I might have to dust off Starlancer and play it again.

So I guess we are supposed to infer that the French nation does not exist in the future? =)

you know, some of us went through the bother of single-handedly turning the tide in that war... kinda depressing to think it was all for naught... ;-)

Well, I doubt the entire population of France was on the fleet - there are French characters in SL anyway. I'd say the random people were with the other houses. That'd explain the chaos of accents, eh? 99 percent of the Brits talk without British accents because they're all Canadians, SAs, Aussies, etc

Some of the pilots have French names in various navies, and some of the Bretonian gear has French names.
