you will get better ships all the way through the plot, just get what you can affort with your money & level... sometime you will need every little shield or hull-point ^^ i got my patriot short after the first plot mission and the defender after the 2nd if i'm right.

Start off with the starflier for the early missions, then when you capture ashcroft and return him to the battleship missuri, you can purchase the defender, get that ship and you won't need to purchase any other ship until you reach the end of the game. My ships throughout the SP were:

Starflier
Patriot
Defender
Anubis

I don't think you need to save up for a better ship and skip over ones that you can afford. I don't think you lose that much money in buying and selling ships. So I usually buy the next best ship as soon as I can afford to. And you're probably going to get to Bretonia soon....there's a few very profitable trade runs for a beginning guy. So money will no longer be an issue.

You flew a Defender up until you got the Anubis? Sorry, but I find that hard to believe. Not saying it can't be done, but I can only imagine that you would have to duck tail and run from several of the SP battles in a Defender.
