breaking away from storyline

So far Ive been following the storyline but I was wondering how someone would go about going down the (smuggler, merchant, pirate) road.

I havent seen any opportunities to do anything but run from Liberty forces and follow the storyline.

You are some what limited to the story line. Make a planet/base mad at you that you need to land on to continue the story, and you have to go back a save and replay, and loose all you gained. After story line, its up to you.
