Mod Clarification

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Mod Clarification

I have heard from many players that they have flown through locked jumpgates/jumpholes and even gone to systems that have no routes to them on unmodded servers.

I want to clarify this. The word mod itself is slang for modification as some of you already know. However, when most people hear the word mod, they think of the rebalance mod or some kind of total conversion of the game. I am one of many modders who has modified the game without making a total conversion. For example, I made a jump hole clear from New York to the Top unknown system. The cool thing was no one else could use it but me, they couldn't even see the wormhole unless of course they had the files I modified.

Now to clarify what players mean when they fly through locked gates/holes in unmodded servers is probably someone has modified the game in such a way in which it was not a total conversion like rebalance or Epsilon. Instead it was as I like to say, "tweaking the files" in Freelancer to change a few things around.

I hope this helps in explaining why some players say they can do things on servers that are unmodded.

If you have any questions about this, please post it.

This message is for the moderators to read. I stuck this subject in here, cause it helps explain a little modding secret, therefore I considered it to be a spoiler. If you guys feel this post belongs somewhere else, then by all means move it where it belongs.

Actually, if you added a jump hole and the server itself didn't have it, you might crash the server, or you might of crashed to desktop.

Those small changes that unlock jump holes are all server-side and that's why you don't need a client.

And it can be that the server may have the systems/holes unlocked mod and you don't, can crash as well.

Yep, you guys are right, in order for things to work properly, both ends have to have the modification done on their machines. Or else you get a crash. But what I was saying originally is that a mod doesn't have to be a patch in of itself, all you have to do is play with the files a bit on both machines to get them where you want them. That's also modding. I guess to summarize it up, you have two types of modding, micro-modding where you just simply modify a couple files, and macro-modding where you modify a ton of files and have to make it into a installer.

Modding is modding. AFAIK, Oregon Roleplay 1.0 has lootable players and unlocked jump holes all server-side.
