Stupid newbie questions megathread!

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Stupid newbie questions megathread!

Hey, I'm new to the forum and had some questions about the game. I've been playing it for about 2 weeks now and I love the open-endedness of it all, but I'm confused on some points and perhaps ready to try to expand it with mods. Sorry if some of these questions aren't really for this forum, I didn't want to spam the forums with 2-3 different topics.
(Just for reference I'm level 34 and have obviously beaten the game)

1) Are CODENAME weapons useful for anything other than selling? I have a ship that can load Lv 10 weapons, but they shoot way too slow and with too much energy drain to be useful to me. Am I missing some neat thing they do or what?

2) Paralyzer missiles seem like a nifty idea but I'm not sure I can find a launcher for them anywhere. Is this another example of something that exists only for me to pawn off at great rates?

3) Did the climax of the storyline and the Edge Worlds in general feel a little rushed? It seems as if they forgot to polish the final areas people reach, which was a bit of a dissapointment. Still, the amount of depth is pretty amazing and the Edge Worlds are still a blast.

4) How come my zoner rep went red? I haven't been attacking them and I got the impression they didn't have any friends or enemies. Most of my targets recently have been GMG, Corsairs, Kusari Corps/Military/Police and BHs. I'd really like to be let back in Freeports. It doesn't help that I haven't seen a place I can bribe for them either.

5) I'd like to get into SP freelancer mods(I am still trapped by the shackles of dialup) and wondering what the basic download setup is?
Install Freelancer
Patch it to 1.1
Install the mod manager thingy
Install the SDK (1.3?) with the ini fixes
Is this the right order? Also, is it possible to mix and match some mods like with Morrowind for instance where you can use multiple mods at once? Being able to tweak my own perfect setup would be great.

6) I'm sure this will be mostly a prefrence thing, but what mods do you recommend I start off with? I'd like more ships, systems, bases, etc. with some more encounters if possible. I'd really like to target a battleship or a luxury liner in transit between systems. Mostly I just want more things to shoot at.

Sorry for the huge post, hopefully my later ones will be a little more concise. Thanks for any help though!

Answers!

1) Codename weapons are the most powerful weapons in the game

2) there are paralzer lauhcer somewhere, try the Omricon system

3) Not rushed in my opinioin

4) The zoners sympathise the GMG, attack them, they get slightly pissed off, overkill them, they hate you. Cosairs may be same, i had the zoners going form green to white when i attacked Cosairs

5) Not sure

6) Beat the game without mods 1st. then try any mod you like. My fav. ones are evolutions and asgard

1) They do big damage but at a slow fire rate and high energy usage. IMO you don`t really need them in SP and selling them will give you good money. Nomad weapons are in fact the most powerful in the game and use no energy.

2) There is no spoon

3) It does feel unfinished in several ways but unfortunately that isn`t unusual in the games industry nowdays.

4) Zoners sympathise with independant factions which include Xenos, Bounty hunters and many others. They are a major pain and you have to watch their rep because the only way to improve rep is by bribing them. I`m not 100% sure but I think Zoner bases are the only place to get zoner bribes so you might be in trouble there... have a look at the big spoiler thread at the top for more info.

5) I installed Freelancer, installed the mod manager, installed the mod to the mod managers folder then used the mod manager to activate the mod (TNG). I was under the impression that you only need the 1.1 patch if you are running a multiplayer server..

6) I can`t recommend mods as TNG is the only one I`ve used so far.. while it`s good I feel the weapons are way overpowered leading to some rediculous situations on the SP campaign. Nice ships though and definately worth a look.

1) i have no idea about level ten weapons except that i got a lot of them, i cant use em cuz i got a hammerhead.

2) im not a missile lover so i dont know.

3) the border worlds are a place where pirates rule so i think the developers intentionally made those systems kinda incomplete.

4) well my rep with the zoners are very good if not excellent, why cuz i did a lot of missions from them, try brbing them again & do some missions for them, that ought to keep your rep with them good for some time.

5) no idea

6) im a person who dont use mods so no point asking me about mods but i suggest mods that make the AI tougher than those with new ships & systems

Hi,
Just found this game too. I agree that the missions seemed a little rushed at the end (there was llike 4 in a row, but given the story line it made sense). Also, many games have 40 -50.

I have collected every L10 gun in the game and 4 nomad weapons also, but dont use any of them. I think the L9 guns are better cus they are faster and use less energy (except nomads use no energy). For Corsairs use 6 L9 skyblasts, for GMG use 6 L9 Kraken. Keep all the guns with the same projectile speed so your aiming reticule is more accurate. This made a huge difference for me.

Havent played with mods yet, or online but am interested in this in well so will keep an eye on this thread.

Okay, there are no Parliz. Missile launchers, but you can get the missiles. (WTF???) For mods, I'd recommend the Battleship Encounters mod. It comes with FLMM. It basically adds Battleships, Gunboats, and Cruisers to the house forces. (They patrol, but you can't buy them.) As for guns, I'd recommend the Diamonbacks with the Nomad weapons. The D-backs use a lot of energy, but they do a ton of damage. The nomad guns use no energy, and do a pretty big amount of damage.
Hope this helps...

codename weapons do lots of damage in one shot, so if you can get that one shot to connect, you'll knock a decent chunk off your enemy's hull. Energy usage from the best codenames are pretty high.

2) Paralyzer missiles seem like a nifty idea but I'm not sure I can find a launcher for them anywhere. Is this another example of something that exists only for me to pawn off at great rates?

No Paralyzer missile luancher, so sell the missiles.

It's ok i guess.

Zoners like indepedent organizations and certain criminal organizations. To bribe Zoners, try an IMG base or a Junkers base.

You don't need the patch, it's for multiplayer, and only if you run a server or have problems.

strafe!

There are several codename weapons with slightly higher firing rates (I think 4.0 is the highest I've seen). As for mods, try, "the Order needs YOU" if you felt the story line was rushed and a battlehip encounter mod if you feel up to taking on the combined fleets of liberty and Rheinland. --- VH16

Awesome! Thanks for all the help.

Kind of dissapointing about the Paralyzer launcher, I wonder how using just one of those would have stacked up to a two Cid config. Once I get a bit of a clue with basic modding, I might try to add it in.
