An event that might change the whole of Freelancer

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

An event that might change the whole of Freelancer

Okay Okay

Something happened to me yesterday that was so incredable, that I spent 24 hours checking that it was real.

Right, I was messing around with my JumpDrive mod, I was trying to iron out some of the many bugs that Drive has.

One such problem is that that ships often get thier wings cut off by the Drive, so I increased the size of the JumpDrive power input By accident i changed the the JumpDrive power size from 50 to 50000 (was ment to be 500)..

Okay so I took off from Manhatten set the galactic coordinates and activated the Drive, the jump tunnel apeared and my ship jumped.

Right.

I came out of Jump, for a change my StarDaisys (strange little ship of mine) wings had not been cut off. I spun round, and nearly had a heart attack.

Floating next to me was Planet Manhatten, at first I thought I had moved Manhatten (not the first trime Ive moved other objects along with my ship.

Anyway i soon relised that the stars around mahatten didn't match the stars of Sigma 17 (where I had jumped). So I flew towards Manhatten, I I got The word LOADING appear on screen.

I spun round and sure enough I could see The FP7 debris field.

It didn't take me long to work out what had happened

I HAD BLOWN A HOLE IN THE UNIVERSE!!!!

You could see Sigma 17 bfrom New York and vice Versa.

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE??

Ive made large changes to Freelancer to make my JumpDrive work, but nothing that could do this.

Since I made the hole my JumpDrive work. Neither will Jumpgates Or Jumpholes.

How is any of this possible. Have I accidently found some old coding left over by DA, or have I just created the ulitimate is Intersystem travel.

OH I forgot!

The "hole" is perminant. I can't make it go away, and it doesn't appear in Any of the Ini files concerning Manhatten or Sigma 17

Sounds cool, if it's real. My guess is you've tricked the coding of the game to think that one section of the space was in both Manhatten and Sigma 17 at the same time, explaining the hole. It probably deals with how the mod works, and you screwed up a sub-routine some where that prevents it. In the meantime, enjoy the glitch, although I think you're title is a bit exagerated, don't you? And if you're making this up, you're a sick individual. --- VH16

Have any plans to make this Jump Drive public? It'd be a big hit.

it sounds too unstable to be released at the moment, once its more stable then it should be released

Post Sun Aug 22, 2004 2:15 am

While trying to get Jumpgates/hole back online I made the discovery that they are all in use, they are all constantly active.

I wonder if its something to do with that?

you keep working on the mod. save your raw code and reinstall freelancer, cause after messing around with it so much you don't know just what happened to the delicate coding of FL. it mighta been tweaked a little, making it highly unstable.

I have a theory, nothing more. I would assume that Freelancer loads each system you visit into the virtual memory while you're jumping. Then, when you next jump, the first thing that happens is that the previous system is "cleared" from the virtual memory before the next is loaded. I think what's happening is that only jump gates/holes are programmed to do that, so when you jump with this, there are two systems loaded into the same virtual memory, which would explain why you can see evidence of both.

Kind of similar to what I was saying, eh Dark? The system is only designed to handle one space system at a time, you're jump program blew a hole in that, and now it believes that there are two systems where there should only be one. Just out of curriosity, where does your nav map say you are? --- VH16

Unfortunatly my Nav Mp doesn't say anything these days.

I had to pull the whole Nav map function to make room for the JumpDrive codinate setter.

I always planed to put the nav map back in once the drive was finished.

May have found something, Freelancer usually draws 63.9mb of RAM on my desktop, but right now its drawing 164.4mb.

Im going to go detonate the Mahatten Star (litte Supernova mod I got as payment from the Nova-Judges clan), that usually resets a system.

maybe u shoule goto them mods forum (dunno which one there is no "new dicovery" forum but maybe there are more experts there???

Right, blew up the New York Star (then ran like hell).

Usually blowing up a sun rests the whole system, and like I expected it did.

The hole is gone. All jumpgates/holes work again.

I fired up my Jumpdrive again, and sure enough the hole was recreated. So this got my thinking, the hole creation is activated by the JumpDrive activation. So this got me thinking. I went into the main parameter file for the JumpDrive and looked at the JumpDrive deactivation settings.

It read
;After Jump
Activate Cordinate1 =1

Restore Power setting = 1

;Server only
Admin takeover = 0

JumpTunnel deactivation =
(it should read = 5.00s)

SO the hole is the Jumptunnel which has been left open!

I tried the JumDrive again after I had corrected the error (musta been caused during file compression) and no hole appeared.

Problem solved

I might consider using this as a JumpGate/Hole disruptor if only I can get rid of the two system problem.

Could you publish a simple zip of your JumpDrive files, even if it isn't completed?
I wanna try that!

Like a sort of Beta test of it.

Im not going to release my JumpDrive for various reasons, the main ones being.

1) Me and my modding team (Team Dark Modding) are very private people, we don't want a thousand + emails a day from twits who can't get the drive working.

2) The mod is extremly big. It would be unfair on people who haven't got a broadband connection.

3) Im afraid that if the Drive was realised it would be like the Cloaking Device (I had to shut down my Fl servers because of those Damned things). It would be too easy for people to cheat using the JumpDrive.

4) We had to use some special file coding to make the Drive work. Im not quite ready to let my .43289 file out into the world.

5) I have some very big enemies (I really do mean that) in the modding community (not just Fl Modding) from when I was head of the Cobra Alliance gaming/modding clan. There are quite a few people who would love to ruin my work.

Oh well, maybe in a few years when my faith in Human nature has been restored, I might consider releasing my Drie.
