My perspective on the 2 "unknown" systems.

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

My perspective on the 2 "unknown" systems.

I was messing around in one of the unknown sectors today flying the Ragnarok around tearing Nomands limb from limb :p

And I suddenly clicked with something about the sky effects.

When people make Easter Egg areas they tend to use the stuff they never got to do elsewhere, the Monkey head was just a funny joke on Primus, and the bots are there because theres lots of bot models, some used as bartenders, others only really appear as communications people when docking, and so they're getting their money's worth from the models.

But what I realised, is that almost all the "sky" areas in FL, use speheres painted with stars to create the sky.

However, one of the unknown areas has an endless sky that spans out across two deformed planes running top and bottom. And the other unknown has either a cylindrical or conical sky "box" - I think.

Regardless, I think it was the case that the design team knew the engine could do far more than just painted spheres for skies, and thus they used the engines full potential when making the areas.

Additionally, in the Unknown area where Planet Primus and Planet Gammu appear, try scanning the Jump Hole.

JUmp holes usually have a message telling you "This anomaly has readings cosistent with a jump hole, Agiera technologies reccomend avoiding all contact with such anomalies" or words to that effect.

However the Jumphole in in that Unknown sector seems to use a message, possibly left over from a much earlier version that is much much longer. It Initially says that the readings are consistent with a jumphole, then it goes on to explain the nature of jumpholes, how many ships have gone missing with them, how they are occasionally mapped, and that "Valhalla Research and Monument Company" recommends you avoid all contact with such anomalies... Valhalla Research and Monument? Who the heck are they? They don't feature in (The finished version) or Freelancer...

I think it would be graet if someone from DA would come on here and explain all the things that they removed and why. Your probably right with the systems aswell. The 2 unknown systems do look fantastic.

Never realized that.

However, the Omicron Alpha unknown is similar to Tau-37.

strafe!

I ran ResHack, did a search for Valhalla, and got some quite interesting things.

"A docking ring is a piece of orbiting technology that, through the use of super strong crystalline polymers and frictionless bearings, assists the smooth atmospheric entry of any interstellar vessel that has the ability to land. Invented in 130 A.S. by Valhalla Research, these 'orbital elevators' almost completely negate the cost of boosting people or materials out of a planetary gravity well. Docking rings revolutionized exploration and industry almost overnight, opening up entire systems for commercial exploration and exploitation. Valhalla Research licenses this technology to the other houses, who in turn agree to design all ships (except for special exploratory and survey vessels), to work with the docking ring system. WARNING: Do not approach a planet and attempt a landing without using the docking ring."

"A jump gate is a conveyance technology that allows instantaneous travel between two distinct points in space using technology pioneered by Valhalla Research and built by Monument Engineering in 130 A.S. According to the annual Valhalla Research Shareholder Report, 'jump gate technology is designed to gather and amplify certain permeable tendencies in real-space and connect them to other congruent points elsewhere in the sector, while still maintaining the structural integrity and stability of the channel created by this process and of the object passing through it.' Valhalla Research and Monument Engineering continue to survey other potential jump point candidates and expect to provide connections with other areas further and further away as their research continues."

"Trade lanes are used for superluminal travel within a system. Trade lanes must be entered from their origin point, usually located near key industrial, military, or civilian bases. The first trade lane was established through a joint venture between Monument Engineering and Valhalla Research in the year 280 A.S.. By 350 A.S., most of Liberty space was crisscrossed by trade lanes. Through financing from Interspace Commerce, the trade lane network was rapidly extended into the other colonies, helping to create a truly sector-wide economy. Trade lanes are the fastest and safest method of transporting goods and personnel within and between the colonies. Plans to expand the trade lanes to connect interests in the independent territories outside of the colonies are pending."

It appears that Valhalla and Monument were either a) corporations that never made it into the finished game or b) corporations that went bankrupt. However, with the universal use of Docking Rings, Trade Lanes and Jump Gates, I consider that unlikely.

It looks to me like they replaced Valhalla with Ageira Technologies and Monument Engineering with Deep Space Engineering. As for the reason behind this, we'll probably never know.

One question

Whats ResHack?
