Sure, when you get to be too good at the game, try going to tough areas in a lower level ship. It re-creates challenge. I've also used the IONCROSS Freelancer Character Editor to try the entire storyline with every fighter in the game and with three that aren't, but the code is on the CD. I've completed the story line in a Banshee(not really low-level, class 7) and a Dagger. In fact, the Dagger was the lowest level ship that I completed it in(without getting killed along the way).

it is not abt low lvl.
the light fighters are excellent and have gr8 manuverability. the best one is the banshee followed by the hawk,drake,cavalier,startracker,patriot,etc........
plz note: the fighters are not in order.

i have used the patriot and starflier to finish the entire story line. in starflier i got destroyed almost 7 times b4 i finished the game.

i used to use banshees a lot, but the current trend on many servers for npc shiels regen and even npc bot use makes it far less appealing nowadays

i did the most challenged missions in the dagger, 245k missions (finished them also), i killed an eagle player in the dagger (still wonder how he looked after he was killed by a simple dagger ), some did even killing titan players in a patriot

so wonder what is better sometimes... the cheap and agile dagger or the big powerfull expensive cow off the titan...
