The Barracuda is a great fighter. First time I went through the story, I saw it on Kyushu, read the stats, bought it and didn't look back. I did try the Hammerhead once when I was a little short on cash but wanted to go explore the outlying systems but it didn't suit me, not being able to mount Class 10 weapons

Thats what I did too - my Crusader was getting a little old in SP, so I took one look at the Barracuda and snatched it up. I then proceeded to every MP server I play on and bought one. Never regretted it. Now that I've found a Hammerhead I'm quite happy with it, just confused as to why people don't seem to talk about it as much. It's not a LOT weaker than a Saber or Titan...
I got my first hammerhead after the storyline. I found it to be a really good ship, it didnt suit me fully but i really enjoyed using it and it helped me explore alot of other sytems without getting shot down. The hammerhead is a really good fighter and helps you get other ships very well.

My ship route in the SP campaign was:-
Starflier->Defender->Crusader->Barracuda->Anubis->Falcon->Eagle
Even though I tried out the Hammerhead/Sabre/Centurion before getting an Eagle, they all seemed sluggish after flying a Falcon for so long.
The Eagle seems to turn just as well as a Falcon..................

can't the legionnaire mount class 6/7 weapons? so how is that better than a crusader?
Both the Crusader and the Legionnaire have a recommended weapons class of three, and a maximum of five. The Crusader only has 2600HP of armour though, and the Legionnaire just 200 below that. Other than that and the lack of torpedo inherent to light fighters, there is no statistical difference. So it comes down to manoeuvrability. And the Legionnaire is far more manoeuvrable than the Crusader, so you basically pick based on that. Torpedoes in SP campaign mode are usually a necessity, though, so I always choose the Crusader over the Legionnaire. And outside of that, my favourite ships are Bounty Hunter ships, so I stick with those. But the Legionnaire has its uses, to be sure.

Try a Stiletto sometime -- Outcasts and Red Hessians fly it. I swapped my Hammerhead for one just to try it out -- and am glad I did. The Stiletto can handle level 9 and 10 guns. Eats up Corsair ships like corn flakes. I've played through the SP game I don't know how many times, but never tried a Stiletto before. It's a fun one to fly.

The Stiletto has a maximum weapons class of level 7, on my version at least, it's its bigger brother the Sabre that handles level 10 weapons. Still, it's an often-underrated weapon of death -- and I don't know why it's underrated. A Stiletto pilot can give you a run for your money if they're good.

Just about anything can give you a run for your money if the pilot knows what they're doing. There are only a few truly sucky ships in the game(one of them being the horrible Bloodhound, another being the even worse Startracker)...the rest either are agile enough to dodge almost every shot, or have enough firepower and armor that a shot or two will do any enemy in...or in some cases(Stiletto and most of the other mid-range HF's), a good mix of both power and agility.
I would say that Freighters actually have a better chance against an LF than a VHF does, simply because every freighter in the game has 100% coverage- there isn't a blind spot to exploit, and there are quite a few rapid fire/high projectile speed turrets available in the class 5/6/7 range. simply put, a freighter can keep a large portion of its firepower directed at an enemy no matter where it moves, which makes Freighters pretty damn good at tagging the game's smaller ships. It is also worth noting that a Freighter's shield is always slightly more powerful than the LF/HF shield of the same type. However, due to their lack of maneuverability and armor, Freighters don't make very good combat ships when they are faced with higher class opponents.

Hmm, you're right. But the Stiletto is one of those ships that are hard to kill when piloted well, but easy to kill when piloted badly. Whereas a Titan has to be really pummelled to dent it and is thus tough to kill whether well-piloted or not, and a light fighter with a terrible pilot is simple to kill. The Stiletto sits slap bang in the middle.

@Nukeit
Even in a Humpback, only 5 turrets are rear firing, so using 3 Sunblasts and 2 Angelito MkII gives 3646 damage/sec
Whereas a VHF can mount a Skyblast B turret to give 2033 damage/sec to any LF staying behind it. Coupled with a stronger shield, more shield batteries and more armour I'd say a VHF is better in turret mode against a LF.

Ah... ships.
My route was...
Starflier-Defender-Dromedary-Barracuda-Anubis-Centurion-Titan
I'll always remember the first time I visited (and was quickly chased out of ((Outcasts really didn't like me))) Omnicron Alpha.
Then I upgraded, came back, killed a few hundred Sabres and Nomads, upgraded to the maximum, then got Evolutions and never went near it again...
Great computer!
What kinda chip you got in there?
A dorito?

I find the Titan very nice to have the best of everything but that doesn't even cut it out there. There are other Craft that offer different features. The best craft I have flown and like is the centuriun. I fly lots of trade convoys and I must mention one thing its nice to fly a Titan... after fly a Humpback for 15 trades to Tokyo and Berlin..
fly all the ships and you will get to appreciate each one of them..
