*** SPOILER *** How to beat Hovis

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Heh, if that's the case, as a seasoned 56k gamer until recently, I can sympathise wholly

Hovis is easy to lose to if ...

<a> you suffer from lag ...

you have the screen size too small.

<c> you have too much cargo.

But, sell your cargo, set the screen details to the minimum with everything turned off, set the screen size large and give it a shot.

Then it is easy.

Reducing the detail levels, etc. will cure the lag.

A larger screen size will let you see the gates better (otherwise it is easy to get lost on some of the gates).

A lack of cargo improves your handling capacity.

And, you need to be in the real flight mode, don't use the autopilot, etc.

you don't HAVE to sell your cargo, you can just jettison it during the race or just before lol! it's tricky, but when Hovis stops on the last stretch, you can overtake him easy!

Is is pretty possible to lose by slamming into a ring when your mouse doesn't like you =x.x=
a fun way to mess with it is to use the speed mod and just thrust through it. otherwise, i don't see how hard it is. i've beaten him in a titan before... took me a couple tries though. those tight turns can get dicey.
but hey... if you can't beat him... i guess...i dunno...call NASCAR and get them to do it for you?

I'M ABOUT TO GET DODGEY ON THIS MOFO!

Another thing for those of you who think it's so easy to beat hovis.....I play on a laptop...not because I WANT to, but because im poor, and I got it for free. Its a P3, with a savage mx and 15inch screen. Not terrible, by any means, but its difficult to follow fast motion sometimes on the screen. So phooey on you elitists! You might be able to beat hovis, but I rawk at yahoo! pool. :p

if you can't dazzle them with humor, riddle them with bullets

I lost to Hovis once: it was the part at the end with the Weapons Platforms. I got rattled when they suddenly opened fire, and I diverted off the course doing evasive maneuvers.

Hovis challenged me to race against him again, and that time I beat him. The storyline kept on going like nothing had happened. So if you can't beat him once, then try again.

A tip, as well: anticipate what direction the next ring will be in, and keep to the corresponding side of whatever ring you're currently passing through. Make a sharp turn after that, and you'll have shut him out from the inside, forcing him behind you.

And where did somebody get that mod for the train? (I realize that it's off-topic, but I'm curious.)

hehe........

you never seem to amaze me. guys hovis is very easy to beat. no need to cheat.
1. use light fighter
2. activate cruise engines
3. race properly
4. dont begin to sweat

I think that racing hovis is boring...race on a Server MP!!!

try getting as many people as you can zipping through on daggers or patriots...Then try lots of people racing in Humpbacks !!!

I lost to Hovis a few times and got really pissed off by the insensitive posts in this thread. If you don't have something constructive to contribute, keep your juvenile comments to yourself. Everyone has their skill set, yours may be the hand eye coordination to easily master video games. Mine happens to be pounding the snot out of people.

But... Ere I digress, If you hit shift-w ASAP and keep a steady hand on the mouse, you should be able to beat Hovis. I finally did and I have the hand/eye coordination of a myopic gorilla.

They're not really juvenile comments, it's just most people find this race ludricrously easy, and can't understand why every week a new thread is posted for it. I mean, it's bad enough they can't do it, but why do they find it impossible to simply read one of the other 7747655 threads about it?

the only time ive failed is when my mouse was on its last battered old legs, and was so staggeringly unresponsive that the game in general was gettin hard. i struggled in a dromedary once tho!

If you're only gonna post "it's so easy!!!11!!11oneone" without offering any tip on how you did it then YES it's pointless and insulting to the people who had problems with it.

Unmodded FL = okay it's not too hard, fly calmly and point ahead anticipate the next ring's position. If you're mostly a trader and not a turn-on-the-dime kinda flier then consider flying a LF for this mission. The last 1/3 of the race is a bit twisty if you're not careful because the next rings sometimes lie offscreen at a weird angle, try not to concentrate too hard on the rings and focus on the purple target instead.

Ships mods = some VHFs turn too slowly and have a large drift due to inertia, try flying a Hydra Corvette through the race some time, not only does it turn slowly, it swings wide as well, you'll get thrown off the course by the first few turns. I'm a fighter pilot kinda flier and I always win in a LF/HF but some VHFs are just too bulky.

Just buy a LF and you'll be okay. For the guys who said they flew a capship to win the race, post screenshots. I've flown a Balistner and it flies like a damn pig, there's no way in hell you can win against Hovis in that. Unless you cheat and mod the ship.

I lost on Rebalance v3.4 flying the X-Wing... I had just got it and was not used to the nuances of flying it. Since cruise speed is increased in the mod its difficult to beat going so fast in a ship that already handles fairly poorly. I made it through using strafing thrusters to get the last bit of turn out of it and even had to cut and reactivate my engines once to make the turn and still won somehow.
