Aliens.... Ahoy?

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Aliens.... Ahoy?

OK, this has not (as far as I can remember) been discussed, so here goes.

Apart from logistical reasons - why on Manhattan (or Earth) did DA not introduce living alien species other than Nomads? Do they assume that humans are the only "intelligent" life-form out there?

I personally have no idea other than DA coudn't think of an alien species that wasn't in Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5 and Stargate SG-1. I'll invent a species for them if they want

@Vektrix

Do they assume that humans are the only "intelligent" life-form out there?

They assume that, just as you assume there are other intelligent beings in the universe. Both sides of this issue are beliefs and thus neither is correct until we prove one way or the other.

I'd agree with SS, we can't prove either way that we are or arn't the only sentiant race in the galaxy.

You've exhausted the topic after only two posts??? That's very impressive!

Seriously, I think that there is only one alien race because of two main reasons;

1) Having more aliens would render the "alien artifact" element of the plot ambiguous.

2) Having only one alien race featured would make the impact of the Nomads more effective when they are revealed in the plot.

Or they relize were more of a danger to them then they can help us.

Never assume the human race is smart, it just gets you in trouble.

I think conversations like this get people into trouble.

When there's only one alien race(which few people know of) it makes the game more enjoyable for me. It gives me the impression that humanity even then is still young and immature. People relate better to humans who are more like themselves.

So what kind of aliens would folks like ... the Kilrathi (overgrown pussy cats)? The Bugs (gigantic nasty insects)? The Thargoids (big grasshoppers)? Alf (a sort of dog made of upholstery)???

Frankly, I'm not so sure there is intelligent life on our own planet!

Don't go there PB! If you do, we'll end up embroiled in a "Why do the aliens in Star Trek look like humans?" battle.

So why do humans look like aliens? Were we created in their image?

May as well REALLY stir things up ...

y looking for aliens if we even don't know what lives in the deepest places on earth

shall we first look their, before entering a battle about aliens..... co'z it still take lots off years before where able to leave our sol and discover new systems with "our" spaceships... and yes, NASA is bussy with "real" spaceships, i say real, co'z they can't leave earth itself... but r in space faster then the normal rocket engines they use today...

OK? What we each believe is not to be challenged (not here anyway). What I want to know is why DA didn't have other races... Probably for gameplay reasons (as already mentioned) or more probably not to complicate the game any further.

As to why aliens in Sci-fi series (not just Star Trek) or essentially human in appearance is quite obvious to me. The actors are human

Why did DA leave out a strong alien presence? Easy, they have crappy writers.

As far as complicating the story, please. making a line into a box is hardly what I would call a complicated procedure. Likewise making a compleately linear story line like this one into a multifaceted storyline would not be complicated.

And besides, how many different factions of humans are there?!?!? You do think they could have replaced say the Mollys with some alien race with the same motivations?

Lack of motivation. now that is the ultimate culprit on this one. Its just something they didn't want to program/write/create/bother with. Laziness.
but I think they earned it anyway. who needs aliens???

personally I take the Warhammer 40,000 position on aliens......they aren't human, kill em all. Suffer not the alien to live.

get your paws off me you damn dirty apes!!!!

Good?....Bad?......I'm the guy with the gun.

Why do we need so many aliens? Wing Commander was at its best when only the Kilrathis are in the picture (yea I know about Firekkans), in Freespace, the Vasudans are rarely mentioned, Starship Troopers barely brings the "skinnies" into account. I think the FL's story is amazingly well-written. Heaps of aliens and alien cultures are done to death in Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, and Farscape. If you really need that in your game, I think X-Universe offers that.

I think FL is something FRESH, not another cheesy template of some other universes. Look at the nomads: they are relatively weak, small in numbers, and prefer to move covertly. Not like the powerful Klingons, a clear and definable threat, but rather like the Bodysnatchers? I like FL's plot.
