Did no-one read the second half?
When starting a new MP character I usually fly straight to dublin, stopping only to fix my rep by harrassing traders or vanadlising depots, then mine until I have amassed 35K , take a final load of 20 gold to new london and buy a drone and a load of luxury food , at that point the universe is my oyster. The other time I mine at graves is when I'm a trader but am completely broke from dying and losing my cargo - because all you need is a gun.
Yeah sure if I had a sabre it's more profitable to mine bounty hunters, and if I have a dromedary it's more profitable to mine freighters or trade (it's worth noting in both cases money is no longer an issue). But when I have a starflier and $2000 making ~$4000 a minute with my Justice MKI looks pretty tempting (ok I'm making the assumption the server doesn't start you of with $100,000 or $999,999,999..). It's a way to bootstrap wealth to a point where the real moneyspinners become feasible. It's a long flight out, but leaves you at New London which is a great place to start trading from, with the drone and luxury food both relatively cheap.
I'm into role-playing, so I kinda frown upon vandalizing depots then selling nano/bots/weapons/shields etc to powertrade from the start (it's lame flyng naked), or abusing the hell out of F1 (unethical and extremely lame), when I loot freighters with a starflier I face the consequences because thats a darn sight more fun. But each to their own.
I also find trading a bit dull to do the whole game, sure it's a great way to make money (-much greater in a dromedary than a starflier), but I'd rather have some variety so instead of doing crappy trading runs in a starflier I mine gold at dublin (which incidentely is a gorgeous system, especially when you fly out of the graves docking port and see little gold flecks). And if you've never visited graves, it's right smack bang in the middle of the most profitable ore field in the game, you can literally mine right outside the docking port.
