Strange, how most Americans seem to be into France bashing these days, just because France opposed ONE of their UN resolutions (now how many UN resolutions has the US vetoed recently? 30, 40, 50?)

How many Americans realise that half the 'American' forces fighting in the US War of Independence were French? Without these troops, and the threat of invasion because most of Europe declared war on 'England' (I know it's Wales+Scotland+Ireland+England), Britain would have easily crushed the uprising.

So rather than bashing France for holding up the plans of the lunatics now in power in the USA, Americans should be grateful to them!

I see the 8 ship rumour as being, dare I say, pulled from someones arse.
I recall the opening cutscenes narrator said "In desperation, the Alliance launched FIVE Sleeper Ships," and then proceeded to name them.
My thoughts on the possible background for the 8 ship rumour, fitting in with the Freelancer world and such, is that is was the creation of Liberty propaganda, by spreading a rumour that 8 ships launched but 3 were destroyed further demonizes the Coalition, takes some of the heat off Liberty in the Sleeper Ship issue (they did arrive 20 years before the rest 'some how'), shows the Alliance as being angelic, giving 8 countries Sleeper Ships rather then being selective, and, along with other inaccurate rumours about the Sleeper Ships and thier origins, could cloud the less then great deeds done by the Alliance and Liberty house by causing conflicting information.

I think the Australian lot would of been thrown in with the Bretonia, we are a former convict settlement of Britains and we still bow to the Queen, until Aus becomes a republic, which I hope is sooner rather the later.
In any case, in the terms of world powers and government funding for space ships Aus is left behind somewhat, while we do have some of the best soldiers in the world we just dont have numbers to be enough of a threat to require our own Sleeper Ship, would be nice though.
