Rheinland is pretty dumb. They apparently sent their whole fleet into Sigma 13 where it got destroyed. A battleship in Hamburg I think is descibed as the "only one remaining after the 80 year war".
What I want to know is what time the 80 year war was at. It doesnt feel very likely that Rheinland could build all the battleships in the storyline in the space of a few years.

I think it is pretty obvious any ship the sie of a battleship would get eaten alive by the explosive gas clouds alone. Don't forget there would likely have been more pockets when the war started then there are now thanks to the mining operation the GMG has done.
