How many copies of Freelancer sold?

How many copies of Freelancer sold?

That is an important question and I have not been able to find the answer -- but the answer tells the tale of whether or not there will be a sequel.

Seems easy enough to do, one of the Hypergates leads close to a series of systems close to Earth and a probe comes back with evidence than mankind has been there, so Trent goes down the tube to check things out, probably in a special probe ship (to get him out of his Sabre or Eagle) and then the plot is on ...

Anyway, if the game sold a lot, Microsoft will be open to a sequel. If it tanked like Starlancer, then ...

then basically the game ends up like Heretic II did, with a devoted fan base, a good web site or two, and no sequel in the works (other than the Diablo series is Heretic II done right).

Im sure about actual figures but it was in the top 10 for a couple of months at one point.

Yeah, one very small point.
For a moment it was a hit, but very soon it dropped right out of the top 10.

Well, that is what it looked like, but I did not know total sales. Guess I'll have to ask around.

I know Wing Commander Prophecy sold 700k units -- but Origin had decided to drop all of the projects for multiplayer on-line stuff and was dropping the Wing Commander line. The game designers basically put the expansion pack (#1 of two) on the web for free as their last act out of the door and Origin eventually packaged it in as Prophecy Gold. I suspect Prophecy would have sold more if the plot cut scenes had all been done, rather than dropped at one third of the plot.

Since then, the general market wisdom is that space sims are dead. Starlancer did nothing to counterdict that, but Starlancer had its own problems.

Freelancer is a strong game, but ...


It needs an autopilot (or equivilent) -- I know, the game designers wanted you to enjoy their world and appreciate their design work and ideas, but ...

It needs an esc by-pass for the cut-scenes, including the jump gates, etc.

Ideally, a sequel, addition/scenario pack would add both.

It also wouldn't hurt if the weapons and equipment, were a bit more differentiated, more like Privateer.

I'll have to give it more thought, but if they wanted a game that was more accessible ...
