ehh...Im stuck

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

1. Do not cheat. It is disgusting in this game. A first person shooter AFTER you have beaten it, maybe. I SAID MAYBE.
2. Fly it with a fighter of some sort. I flew mine with a heavy fighter purchased at New London.
3. Keep in close to the rings. Less distance there.
4. Free-Flight mode. It is the only way to go. Point and click is a Microsuck, oops, Microsoft, upgrade? for the game.
5. Hey, if I can beat it with out a cheat, any one can. I suck at these space flight sim type games.
6. Buy a new mouse. When I upgraded to an optical mouse, my game play got much better. I swear by the Logitech brand, but find one that suits you.
7. As was said before, you will feel a sense of accomplishment when you beat it without cheats.

Keep your chin up and keep trying.

ok guys i found and downloaded bini and followed the first 2 steps of the cheat described in davidiusbrown's thread in the general editing forum. here are the steps:

1. Download bini (in the utilities list)

2. Copy bini to this directory
c:\program files\microsoft games\freelancer\data\missions\m06

i did those two without conflict.
I didnt understand this one:

3. Run bini.exe on the npcships.ini files in each directory to uncompress it into npcships.ini.txt

can someone please explain how to do this third step so that a n00b like me would understand?

Sterling means he has a fine character.

The race really isn't that hard, once you get the hang of it. But you have to hit the cruise engines IMMEDIATELY or Hovis will have won the race before the first ring. If he gets a lead on you, it's all over. It's easier to beat Hovis on the second round, when that instruction panel doesn't pop up in front of you and slow you down by having to click it off. Also, try to position yourself so that you are almost aiming at the next ring by the time you enter the one in front of you. You don't have to go through dead centre. You can angle through and just cut the corners.

I really hate that #$&@!! race, since I think it is an assinine thing to put into a game set in the 31st century. How the hell did Bubba and his drag racing get so far into the future? Some programmer hung up on The Dukes of Hazard reruns???

p.s. I did have a hell of a time before I went out and bought a new mouse -- an optical one. I'll never have a ball mouse again.

Optical mouses are the way to go. Do not be fooled, however, by those with TWO lasers. I have discerned no real advantage with them.

The trick to beating the Hovis dude is this

Theres a certain part of the race where you have to double back on yourself, (well almost).
He will bank left, YOU will bank right, this puts you miles in front of him.

There easy, and with no cheats =D
