Ouch Baby. Very ouch.

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Ouch Baby. Very ouch.

Ok, I guess I never realized that the shield vs. weapon type made a whole lot of difference because I have almost always had a turret or low level hard point dedicated to a pulse weapon. So the shields have never been a problem. But last night I was flying thru the Sigma 19 system and looking for the Hien wreck, found it just south of Planet Hades. Got the to it shot it for my Suncannon B’s and then started my way back to the jump gate to get out of there. Not crossing any enemy patrols or anything – then Lane Hackers come out of no where and start attacking me. They have Daggers and they are no match for my Banshee. Then their big brothers in Stilettos come and they shouldn’t be at all difficult because I can definitely out maneuver them. But there weapons just eat thru my shields and I am out numbered 4 to 1… so when I am on one’s tail the other three are on mine. I tried 4 times last night before I finally had to go to bed and I couldn’t make it thru. This ever happen to anyone else?

shields and weapons do make a difference, theres positron and gravitron. You really gotta research into your weapons and shields before going to find a wreck all alone. In that specific instant i simply would have maxed out my afterburner while doing crazy aerodynamical moves to avoid the fire.

Lane Hackers tend to have graviton shields and to use tachyon weapons, at least in the usual places I have encountered them playing through the game. Some factions have different weapon types at higher difficulty levels. I haven't been to Sigma 19, so I don't know if they are carrying different weapon and shield types. You can always scan the ship and see the types of shields and weapons they are carrying.
For graviton shields, you will do most damage using particle weapons and least damage using tachyon and neutron weapons.
For defense against enemies using tachyon weapons, use graviton shields. Tachyon weapons do extra damage against positron shields.
Where exactly the sweetspot is in trading off between a higher grade shield vs one that is more vulnerable to a specific weapon is, I don't know. That is why I keep lots of extra weapons on the ship, so I can change them out if need be for specific star systems and enemies, to maximize damage and defense.

Slight correction: neutron/tachyon weapons are most effective against molecular shields and least effective against positron; laser/photon have the most effect on positrons and least on gravitons.

Some Outcasts and some Bounty Hunters carry particle weapons - Pyros/Kraken or Warrior/Buckshot respectively. These can bite pretty hard into a graviton shield and are more difficulat to evade than the slow plasma guns other folk are using.

The gravitons are the best choice overall, though, because they have the same capacity as the other shields one class higher and enemies with particle/plasma weapons aren't all that common anyway. Among shields of the same class the gravitons are best against all weapon types except plasma/particle, where they are the second best. And gravitons also have the best resistance against shield busters ...

do you by chance know where to pick up the class/lvl 7 graviton shield, i think that it is called the Protector?

Sigma-13, Gas Miner Naha
Sigma-17, Planet Kurile
Sigma-17, Atka Research Station
Bering, Pacifica Base
Hokkaido, Ainu Depot
Stuttgart, Darmstadt Depot

P.S.: the highest-level graviton is the class 8 Adv. Protector. It is so valuable that the Corsairs sell this shield only in a heavily armoured shopping cart, so that you can drive your freshly bought shield safely to a place where you can buy a decent ship like the Valkyrie or the Falcon.

Heh, and that seems to be the ONLY place you can get it, cuz it's not sold anywhere except on your "Heavily Armored Shopping Cart" which, if I'm not mistaken, is what you call the Titan.

All very well & good, but in MP if you die you lose all those alternate
weapons and shields. For MP just go for the biggest guns you can mount.
You can always de-activate some if your battery runs down too fast.
For MP shields, just get the best Graviton, it has the largest capacity.
CODENAME and Nomad guns have no best/worst shield match.

If you're playing the rebalance mod, just get the Matterthief weapons for lower levels (4 and below) and the Vampires for higher levels (I think Level 7 is as high as they go) These weapons are so powerful, they can overide a shield handicap.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the difference between "effective" and "weak" guns vs shield types isn't all that much. Guns do 20% more damage than normal against shield types on which they're extra effective, and 20% less damage than normal if they're "weak" on a shield.

T-Hawk, that turns into quite a bit more when there are 3 stilettos on your six all gunning for you... that extra 20% really eats up your shield.

Well, I made it through, I went and got the Protector (lvl 7 grav.) and that little bit helped, also I tried a little more evasive manuevering. Now I have my Sunblast B's and my Suncannon B's!! The space janitors are mopping up a whole lot more bad guy residue now!

"Heavily armored shopping cart"... Yes, that's what it's good for. And killing AI ships

If you want to know which factions you will encounter before going to a certain system, so you'll know what type of weapons/shield you should mount, just doubleclick the system you want to go to in your NavMap. Information about the system, including it's inhabitants, will be displayed.
