ngh, I disagree with your assessment about mission 9 being easier. Mission 4 (fleeing from Liberty) is dead easy if you know how dock and how to fly your ship; you do not need to use a single shield battery or nanobot during this mission, even in a Starflier. Mission 9 is tougher; a fumble during the initial skirmish with the patrol cost me both wings of my Starflier and at the Arch I used up all shield batteries and all but 2 of the nanos (although I collected some of them back during the final skirmish on the way out).
The difficulty in this mission is
not the destruction of the generators - they are pretty weak and even the Starflier can take them out pretty quickly with guns only. The difficulty is to destroy the generators without getting destroyed oneself because while shooting at the generators it is necessary to fly a straight line and that makes it easy for the AI to hit the ship. Also, there are missiles flying about that are too powerful to be ignored; they can do serious damage to a light ship like Starflier/Patriot/Dagger.
So what can be done? Flying a straight line while shooting immobile targets: the flight path cannot be varied but speed can. Reduce speed to somewhere between 0..20 m/s and start shooting, but tap afterburners lightly every half second or so. This way the guns of the battleship will not hit you but you get ample time for pounding the generators. If you get an 'incoming missile' warning it is a judgement call: drop a flare if you think it will do the job (the flare has to be far enough away from your ship so that you are outside the blast radius of the missile when it hits the flare), otherwise break off and shoot the missile or go shoot another generator for a while. Also, choose your attack path so that you minimize your visibility from the battleship (fly tangential to the sphere, not radial, coming from the direction of the planetoid).
Also, make sure that your shield is fully charged before you try to dock (at least if you have only a class 4 shield or lower). It is very likely that you get hit with missiles during the docking sequence and a single missile hit while shields are down can toast a ship like the Starflier. Getting fireballed while docking can be very frustrating in this particular mission.
BTDT. If you don't have any shield batteries left then just zig and zag about for a few seconds until the shield is recharged.
The rest is just basic combat, nothing special there.
EDIT - two additional tips: try to get to the Arch at cruise speed (cruise engines or kill-engine slide). This way you have less of the incoming patrol gunning for you while you work on the generators; if you go at normal or thruster speed then you will probably take some of the patrol with you. Also, using chase-cam view instead of cockpit view makes it easier to judge the tactical situation since near the Arch there are a whole lot of guns trained on your rear (battleship, Arch turrets, fighters, gunboats); I think this is a must for small fighters like the Patriot because they are seriously outgunned.
