hovis race

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

hovis race

Im sure people must be fed up with writing replys to the Hovis race, but ive got the same problem, i cant beat him. Ive gone through the forums about the race and nobody mentions about the cruise drives cutting out which is what happens to me. Is there an invisible shield in between each hoop? Which when u pass through it slows u down. i can be right behind Hovis following his line but i always get stopped at least twice every race. I can navigate the hoops fine (trying this race over 100 times over the past 3 days sure has made me a better pilot) Ive bought the light fighter and emptied my cargo hold but always at some point during the course i get stopped. Does any one know what to do to skip the race or reprogram or something, anything!! its driving me mad Im so close to giving up totally which is a shame cause its such a good game. I used to love elite and frontier, and freelancer is just as good (and looks a whole lot better)
Thanks

Activate the cruise engines directly instead of using the 'Go to' command. The standard shortcut for this is SHIFT+W. Activate mouse flight mode (hit space bar) and steer manually.

'Go to' mode will drop you out of cruise a certain distance from the destination, and it will stop the ship completely when you reach the destination. If there are any obstacles in the flight path (say, race track hoops) then you can get dropped out of 'Go to' cruise as well.

BTW, this was mentioned in earlier 'Hovis Race Problem' threads but it is hard to tell which ones. There are plenty to choose from since every noob must create their own, new thread for this, and so the answers are scattered far and wide.

AMAZING!!! it was sooo easy!! i was always using F2 to use cruise engines. I used shift-w the 1st time and they cut out, so i tried the 2nd and kicked his ass!! U know Neo at the end of the Matrix when hes fighting the agent with one arm and hes finding it easy! Well it was just like that but flying a ship....waffle,waffle. Anyway thanks alot, i can now carry on with the game. Can u recomend where to play online? After i play single player ill probably try fighting it out in the real world!
Thanks again.

You're welcome, I am glad that I could help you have more fun with the game. And I am not surprised that you beat the race so easily now - you had plenty of practice and only the F2 thing was getting in the way. I think the Hovis race is one the best scenes in the campaign - the music, the commentary of the observers, everything. I always look forward to it when I have found a reason to play the campaign yet again.

And don't worry too much about Internet MP games right now ... Beat the game, and then explore further until you have found all ships and flown them all (including the Humpback ). The campaign is just the first part of singleplayer-FL, there is a lot to come after it. And don't rush it. Take your time to explore, to try out different weapons/ships and different ways of earning cash (flying paid missions, trading, smuggling, pirating, mining, ...). There is only one first time, make the most of it.

Sherlog,

Me too. Tachyon's ring course was better, tho. Targets to shoot, slots instead of round holes in
advanced courses... I just had an idea what about a mod that brings back Hovis to race
against after SP? Go in the bar & talk to him & go race. Too bad I don't know how to mod

further until you have found all ships and flown them all (including the Humpback )

Especially Humpback! See my post: 'Humpback' It's all about flying the Humpy.

I'm working on one now for the Mule, since that's a good ship for MP newbies on Elite server.

Just put the race idea on the General Mod forum...

Why cant people understand about using the ****ing F2 go to command??? What is your IQ ?

Post Fri Jun 13, 2003 6:27 pm

Perhaps it is because the actual behaviour of the bloody command is undocumented like so many things in Freelancer, and I do not think that posts like yours are likely to improve the situation a whole lot.

I liked the ring course from the Training Missions in SL...you have to hit targets while flying through, instead of just steering.

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless

Definetely

i always manage to screw up that race even wen i shift w who actually uses F2? i cant seem to beat hovis so i'm just flying newhere

Countach, what is your problem? Are you missing hoops?

The race is a bit more difficult in a heavy ship like the Crusader because the heavy ships overshoot more than the light ones like Starflier or Cavalier. With the heavy ships you need to look at the hoop after the one you will go through next so that you can fly a smoother curve (because you cannot make sharp turns at cruise speed). This is especially important if you fly a freighter like the Clydesdale or Dromedary.

TIP - The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.

"Sure, as long as I don't get shot at, held at gunpoint, skewered by giant alien shapeshifters, have to jump out windows, fight off unfriendly nomad incubii"

Post Sun Jun 15, 2003 5:41 pm

TIP - wkantanka's TIP applies only to ships with infinite turn rate and zero inertia. All ships that can be used for racing Hovis have a finite turn rate and non-zero inertia, and so the fastest path through the course is not a series of straight lines connecting the centers of the hoops. This is most evident with the heavier ships.

well thanks for the physics lesson professor. That tip worked fine for me when I had the Crusader. First time too. Give it a try. Oh, and the mouse control works well for me too.
