Mission 7 / Cavalier LF: Am I screwed?

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Mission 7 / Cavalier LF: Am I screwed?

I sold my bretonia heavy fighter and bought a cavalier LF before the hood race thinking I would need it to win the race, get the bounty hunters off my back and move on. Now I find myself in Mission 7 - no freeplay after mission 6 - trying to beat off the rheinlanders at the Tau jumpgate. I've made it through so far, but I can't help but wonder if I'm completely screwed with this ship moving forward. Especially since I'm just squeaking by on cash. Is there freeplay after mission 7? Can I possibly survive in this ship past the Tau jumpgate? I hate to spoil it for myself, but if it's a lost cause I'd sooner backtrack to an earlier point. Thanks.

The Cavalier may look strange but it is a very fine ship and mission 7 should be easy in it. In fact, it is one of the easiest ships for this mission; there is only one that is even better (the Drake).

It is not necessary to have a super fighter during this mission; pretty much any ship will do, except perhaps for Rhino and Defender. I have flown it in Starflier, Patriot, Dagger, Piranha, Cavalier and Crusader. For the first time through I would recommend using a class 5 shield, preferrably the graviton kind (you can buy one during the mission).

Some bits are more fun if you have a maxed-out heavy fighter because there are opportunities to kill gunboats, cruisers and battleships. However, like all story missions this one is slightly more difficult in a heavy fighter than in a light one, so you may want to save the battleship-killing for your second run through the campaign.

I can't go through with my Cavalier. My shields get destroyed very easily(lvl 4 Guardian),so when I survive the first fight,I am short of extra shields and bots and get killed during the next fight.

What can you suggest?
Thanks

During this mission there are only a few light skirmishes before you can buy the class 5 graviton shield. To get through these easily:

(1) If you get a warning about an incoming missile, drop a flare. This does not work every time but often enough. If the missile is coming from in front of you the flare has little chance of distracting it; Shoot the missile or take evasive action (fly a hard curve away from the missile, drop flare, afterburn). In most cases you can out-turn missiles and they cannot catch you at afterburner speed.

(2) If an enemy drops a mine, try to shoot the mine down or dodge it. The mines are not very powerful but it is still a bad idea to 'collect' all of them with your shield.

(3) Do not take the enemies head-on; your shield cannot stomach what they can dish out with their main guns. Dodge a bit and then take them from the side or from the rear.

(4) Watch your rear. If you use chase-cam view then you can see when you get shot at from behind or from the side, and where the shots are coming from. Take evasive action as appropriate. If an enemy is chasing you then you can drop a mine to force them to manoeuvre, which can give you a few seconds of breathing space to finish off your current target. To drop a mine while under fire from behind, wiggle your tail a bit, turn off afterburner, drop mine, then afterburn. This is necessary because you don't want an enemy to shoot one of your mines while it is still within blast radius of your ship. Seeker mines are inexpensive and do a good job.

(5) When you are on the six of a Valkyrie, watch your shield strength. The Valkyries have rear turrets that can sting quite a bit but you can try strafing to throw off their aim.

(6) Try to stay away from cruisers and battleships until you are a better pilot. The fighters sometimes lure you near one of the capital ships when you are chasing them and the cap ships can really hurt you if you get too close for too long.

use your newfoudn advantage, ie mobility. use your afterburners, switch to reverse, make tight turns, stay on their tale while not alowing anyone to stay on yours... first time i played the sp campain i went thru lvl 12 only using light fighters, its just a different method really... also try to use weapons with high range (and speed) and high repeating rate. and try to make sure that your weapons all have the same speed or else you'll risk having your slow weapons miss, or your fast weapons overshoot.
