Poor Centurion

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Poor Centurion

Howcome the Centurion doesn't get any props around these parts? If you don't want to fly a level-10 VHF, it's right up there with the Hammerhead in power and maneuverability. The Centurion does lack a turret, but it's got more armor than the Hammer -- and plenty of people like the Titan over the Sabre which has exactly the same differences of more armor and the turret doesn't fire forwards. Plus the Centurion even holds a few more batteries and nanobots. It lacks in cargo capacity, but you don't do freight runs in a fighter anyway, and it's got enough space to loot from wrecks and transports...

And us way old-schoolers remember the Centurion as THE ship to have back in Privateer. (The ship model in Freelancer is almost the same except for the "pegs" on the top and bottom.) So what gives for the poor Centy?

I dunno... The Centurion in FL just doesn't seem to have that "I'M THE BADDEST MUTHA IN THE VALLEY" look to it like the Privateer Centurion:

My hat's off to the gentleman who built and textured that 3D model..

Nice pic Chandrasekhar, but the FL Centurion, like the Titan, looks a bit squished to me, and nothing outfles, outshoots, or outstyles (yeah, baby!) the Eagle. The main problem with the Centurion is that given the factions it's much harder to get the Centurion than the Hammerhead, and so it often gets skipped over in favor of the Top Three (Eagle, Sabre, Titan). I do say this, though, if the Hammerhead is called a VHF, the Centurion should get the VHF label too... even without the turret.

I don't remember the winglets on the Privateer Centurion... are you sure they are there?

But I outfly Eagles in a Drake...

Don't start me on why Drake > Eagle...

I didn't know that you can post .png pics on this forum... Thanks.
Back on topic: The old Centurion looks waaay better than the 'new model'.
As for the Hammerhead... Let's just say that my opinion would be censored out...

Hey, I actually hadn't seen the old-school Centurion in a while, and certainly never in a picture as well-rendered as that. The FL ship model really isn't all that similar, I guess. It has the same "just the basics" look of a cockpit attached to two wings (unlike ships like the Eagle with extra parts everywhere), but the wing design is quite different, and the FL model has the ridiculous "pegs" and lacks those beefy engines which are a good part of the old Centurion's badass look.

Now if I only knew enough about editing 3D meshes to get the classic Centurion into Freelancer...

to CW:

Yep, the Privateer Centurion did indeed have winglets... Page 44 of the Privateer manual shows it pretty good. I didn't render that scene though-- It was a screencap from Vega Strike, one of those user-written space-combat games.

Shoot, I got 3D Studio Max 5 (the latest version) sitting on my desk here along with Adobe Photoshop 7 (my university has site licenses for those software packages so students like me were able to pick them up for cheap)... Pity I don't have the time to learn to use any of it LOL. Otherwise I'd be building Privateer 3D models like crazy just about now. (I've always liked that aggressive look of the Kilrathi Gothri as well).

You should look me up sometime, I'm well known as the only guy on Browclops who flies a Centurion.

I actually have 5 accounts, and not one Class 10 fighter among them.

But, I must take exception to what you said about the Centurion and why people pass it up.

Common myth: The Centurion is significantly more maneuverable than a Titan/Sabre.

* NO, it is not. The Centurion has a maximum turn speed of 60 deg/s, just like the Titan and Sabre. What it DOES have is a slightly improved angular acceleration, so it feels a little peppier.

The Hammerhead and the Eagle share similar characteristics, 80 deg/s maximum rotational speed, and peppy angular acceleration.

But hey, most folks in Eagles never learn how to take true advantage of their speed, being that they end up fighting against other Eagles all the time. So it's not difficult at all to beat an Eagle pilot with a well-equipped Centurion.

But I do wish you got SOMETHING special, something that would make the Centurion worth owning. True, the cross-sectional target area is smaller than the Titan, but it's not TINY like the Legionairre. The power is good, but I wouldn't expect anything less of a 450k fighter.

Why couldn't they have made it the same rotatational speed as the Legionairre (75 deg/s )? This is the same problem that plagues the Stiletto, the HFs in the series are as slow as the VHFs, so people just wait for the big boys or buy something else.

Figger I link a few more Centurion images... All I can say is "sweet.."

I've been flying a Centurion on Elite until last night when I decided to try a VHF. I'll be trading my shiny new titan in for a Centurion as soon as I get on the server tonight. I haven't run across anything out of my reach in that boat (although I get reminded I lack skills regularly), but most of my Eagle kills are from torpedoes. If light fighters didn't lack torp mounts I think I'd try one of those out again.
