Targetting question...

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Targetting question...

Hey all,

With a Titan / Eagle, does anyone know if the turret gets taken into account for targeting reticule ? For shooting forward I mean.

Thanks,

MAT

Then dont fire forward if thats what you mean on the Eagle/Titan, only forward firing fighters with turrets are Dagger / Sabre / Anubis <-(not in multi) / Defender maybe but can't remember but its a whale so wouldn't use it if it did have forward firing.

uh, no i meant that the targetting system takes into account your fastest weapon, right?

so if i have a turret mounted on an eagle, it doesn't get used if i am firing at a target in front of me. so does it get taken into account by the targetting system still, even though it isn't used ? cause if it does it is faster than all the lvl 10 weapons...

Nope its only used when firing backwards or in Turret View but being in a fighter and Turret view is pointless.

But on ships that do fire forward yes it does affect the aim. I find the slower refire rate Turrets better than the faster, more so than worrying about the projectile speed.

Currently I'm using the Salamanca Turret, I was using the GMG Skyblast which does have more punch. But seems to affect the aim more with its faster fire rate.

Firing rate (8.33, 4 etc) does not affect the targetting reticule.

It's calculated by taking the average of the projectile speeds of your guns, because what's important is the time it takes for the projectile to travel to the target, not the number of projectiles fired per second.

If the turret is activated (green in the weapon list) then it will be included in the calculation. But with an Eagle there isn't much point having a turret anyway.

I just stuck the old Order turret off my Anubis there. I use it for mining
Gold in Dublin between Molly waves, and for shooting wrecks. Less waste.

I keep it disabled in the HUD otherwise. Good thing about a cheap turret
is it's cheap to repair after going through a Radiation Field.

Turrets are only vital on Freighters and the Dagger. Even on the Anubis
I kept it turned off, got a slightly better aim (650 Vs. 600) and a higher
average weapon class loadout. I think that since Anubis has a Optimal gun
lvl of 5 for 6 guns & a turret, if it doesn't need to feed a turret the optimal
climbs a bit for the other six hardpoints. AFAIK.

@ Circumcisor

I'm not talking about what it should do in theory, I'm talking about Online against NPC's and PvP. If you find that any given weapon doesn't perform as expected then you dont use it.

Personally I find the faster fire rate Turrets Throw off the aim, might be a bug or might just be a visual anomily but after testing a number of lvl 8 and 9 turrets thats what I've found.

I was actually replying to Jono's bit where he said the aim is by the fastest weapon, which isn't true.

I think turrets are a good idea, they are quite useful if you want other options on how to play, so you don't have to just buy a fighter and fly around. It would be nice to have auto fire (mentioned many times elsewhere) and higher capabilities on freighters to carry c10's. Imagine a 250 cargo capacity freighter with 6 c10 turrets that could take down a squad of corsair Titans ...

Also I agree with Frobozz, they are great for mining and shooting wrecks so you don't blow up the loot, but I usually just select one or two guns instead. If you get jumped while mining, you can kill a Xenos starflier in about 3 hits with a pair of Salamanca Mk2. Which is nice.

"fastest weapon" can refer to the speed of the projectile, as well as the firing rate. Chances are, you misunderstood his(her) reply.

The turret projectile velocity is figured into the targetting indicator when using the turret on a Sabre to fire forward along with the other guns. It's ideal to have the turret's projectile speed match the guns for targetting accuracy, but not essential in most opinions I've heard. I suppose that the farther apart the velocities are, the more problems it will cause with the targetting. It's not easy to match the gun speeds with a turret on a Sabre, because most people prefer to use the c10 guns, which have a speed of 600m/s, but no turret has that speed.

So, I don't use c10 guns on a Sabre, I use 6 x Kraken Type 2 and a Salamanca or Adv. Debilitator turret. The Kraken Type 2 does more damage over time than the c10 guns except the Diamondback and Cerberus, with better efficiency, higher projectile speed (harder to dodge), and higher refire rate. This loadout has everything in sync: 700m/s speed, 700m range, 4.0 refire. I use the pulse turret instead of the neutron turret if taking shields down quickly is important. You do have to watch your power, unlike Nomad guns, but it kills very quickly.

sorry, n00b with the posting business - i did mean projectile speed and not firing rate.

is it known for certain that it runs off the average and not just the highest projectile speed ? i saw elsewhere in the forums that it was just the fastest.

Post Wed May 14, 2003 6:40 pm

It's definitely the average.

I normally try and keep mine matching at 600, but as long as your chosen weapons blow the cr@p out of whatever you're shooting at it probably doesnt matter that much. I remember starting SP where it was difficult to find matching weapons, and all that happens is you miss a few more times. Plus, the lag playing online is worse for making you miss. Just get some nice looking, good damage weapons and blow them all away

That red targetting thing is annoying anyway, it's like playing chase-the-red-blob-around-the-screen. I find myself focusing on following the red thing than looking at what I'm shooting at. I wish there was a way to turn it off

PS I'll be less stressed soon. MSc final exams in 5 days
