I agree that it's a "must have" improvement. I have an idea of how it could be done, but not the skill to do it. If any modder's want to take up the challenge, here's what I was thinking...
1. Reactivate jump holes to the Tohoku system.
2. Modify the Order Base there as follows:
a. Make ship dealer have spots for 3 ships, with one of them empty.
b. Make it so that any ships sold there stay "on sale" there until bought again.
c. Make all ship values $ 0.00 at this base only (buying or selling).
d. Make all equipment or cargo sold there stay "on sale" there until bought again and also valued $ 0.00 at this base only.
With these modifications in place, you should be able to fly in, trade your ship for another, outfit it and when you come back later, buy your original ship and equipment back again! It would also serve as a player "storage depot", to drop off cargo or weapons for later use. Basically, it would be your own base!
It would be even nicer, if someone could get "The Arch" working in the same manner! Then you'd have a "Home Base" with character. If anyone ever manages to edit the NPC dialogs, you could have the bartender say things like, "Hey there boss, good to see you made it back alive" or "Nothing happening at the moment sir, it's been pretty dead around here".
Throw in a Jumphole to each of the main systems and you've got a nice base of operations! Anyway, that's what I'd do, if I had the skills.
