As I believe I said previously, it depends how good you are. If you're running an Eagle and you only shoot when you're pretty sure of a hit, energy use is largely irrelevant.
Now, let me bust out a little Math-Fu...
Running 4 Nomad Blasters (Cannons work too, but they make calculating kill time difficult, since they run on a 3.03 refire rate. Blasters run on 4.00, so it's easier to calculate the number of shots required to kill.) and two Sal2's, since Sal's match projectile speed and it's just stupid to mix and match speeds, especially for PVP, where aim is crucial. Anywaya, Running 4 Cannon and 2 Sal2's, you're doing 14,176 hull damage per second. Halve that to get shield damage, which comes out to be 7,088. That means it will take you MORE than 1 second of continuous fire to knock out a level 10 shield, even discarding recharge rates on the shield. Once you're through the shield, you can destroy the hull on a Titan completely in less than one second.
Now, lets swap in one TDC instead of one of the Sal2's. Hull damage per second has dropped to 12,380. I think we just barely beat the one second mark on Titan hull. However, shield damage per second is now at 11,228, more than enough to annihilate the 1 second mark. In fact, we're just a little tiny bit over the .75 second mark.
Swap out the second Sal2, and we're at 10,584 hull, which by no stretch of the imagination beats a Titan. In fact, you're just a little low to kill a Sabre in one second. However, we're up to 15,372 shield, which is totally overkill...almost. See, you can now kill a shield in just a slight over .5 seconds, and we can easily destroy their shield in .75 seconds, or three shots.
Now, none of this takes your flying into account, it's assuming you're able to hit with every shot, which we know is unrealistic. PVP ends up being a lot like killing bosses in Zelda games. You have to do something to make them vulnerable (drop their shield), then pound on them till the shield comes back up. Repeat until dead (in this case, it's repeat until they run out of nanos and bats). Having the TDC's makes the shield dropping part a whole helluva lot simpler.
You can carry one or two, your call...I like having two, but it's really up to each individual pilot.
Also, there's a certain psychological value to dropping their shields fast. When you hit them once and their shields are at nothing, it triggers that reacton of "Oh, crap! He can kick my ass!" They tend to get nervous, and a nervous enemy makes mistakes, making your job easier.
