Post Sun Apr 13, 2003 11:29 pm

Doh. I need to read more carefully, it would seem. Let's change this:
No; anyplace that sells the top 3 vhf's; yes.
to this:
No; can't; no.
There, all better

"IS there one?"

No.

"How about a Adv Champion shields where do you get those?"

Nowhere.

"Can you get The Nomad Laser Cannon?"

Not without editing.

ok i dont think you can get nomad lasers but if you read other posts it says that you cant get adv champion shields

Adv. Champion shields cannot be bought without a mod, and you wouldn't want them anyways. Since they're an NPC shield, they have a recharge rate of 1, meaning, I believe, 1 shield point/sec (I still haven't figured out precisely how recharge rate converts into shield points/sec)

The NPC shields (with a regen of 1) are separate from the player equipment. The Adv. Champion graviton class-10 shield does exist in the hardware data, and it's got a whopping 11K capacity, but no base has been set up to sell it. It is possible to modify the base equipment-for-sale lists to make this shield available for purchase. However, I suspect it was made unavailable by the game developers to keep the game challenging; because if you use this shield against the weaker, laser-shooting enemies in the game, you are practically invulnerable to their weapons.

Actually, I beg to differ. You would die FASTER to a complete newbie ship if you were using that shield than if you were using Adv. Brigandine. Ever wonder why computer ships don't regenerate their shields? It's because they have a regen rate of 1. Basically, damage done to the shield is permanent, unless you use a battery. Take a newbie for example. They have two justice 1's doing about 10 damage per shot and firing 8.33 shots per second would knock out the Adv Champ in 66.02 seconds - a little over 1 minute. With the recharge rate of an Adv. Brigandie shield it is technically impossible for a single newbie Starflier to knock out your shield. You just regenerate too fast for them to keep up. Now, compare 66 seconds to knockout to INFINITE shield life....I think I'll stick with my regenerating shields, thank you very much.

If you were going against stronger enemies, though, then that shield might be useful. Against more powerful enemies, they can knock an Adv Brigandine shield in, say, 5 seconds. At that speed, the regen rate simply doesn't have enough time to make a difference. In that situation, the Adv. Champ would buy you about 1-2 seconds extra shield lifetime, but you're still SOL when it finally dies, which it WILL do. At least with an Adv Brig, you can run in circles or something so they don't hit you much while you wait for your shield to charge a bit.

Here, let me repeat myself:

"The NPC shields (with a regen of 1) are separate from the player equipment."

All NPC shields have a regen of 1; for the purpose of making the AI ships easier to kill when there's several of them and just one of you, I guess. The player version of the Adv. Champion graviton shield has a regen of 245.

Post Mon Apr 14, 2003 4:51 am

Oh...sorry, you didn't make a distinction that you were talking about a Player version of the shield...I thought you were saying that NPC Adv Champs exist, but cannot be bought.

Well, then, perhaps it's because those are totally cheap and overpowered when compared to other level 10 equipment? Judging by the current rate of increase in power per level, an 11k shield is somewhere around Class 13/14.

Post Mon Apr 14, 2003 5:00 am

Well, generally speaking, the graviton type of shield at a given class level has a good bit more capacity than the other types. Without doing the ratio math, it does appear to be at least somewhat in keeping with this trend. Regardless, perhaps you can now see why this shield would make you practically untouchable to enemies in the inner systems, particularly to the laser/photon shooters.

Post Mon Apr 14, 2003 5:05 am

True, but you're already untouchable with an Adv Brig shield...

Besides, if an expansion pack is coming, then, in theory, won't it add stuff like this in? Basically, once we're all playing the expansion, we'll be able to do exactly what you're talking about, except we'll have cloaking devices as well (wistful thinking here, but hey - you know you want one, too).

Post Mon Apr 14, 2003 5:45 am

Yes, but this shield would make it that much harder to damage you. You could almost just sit still and let them shoot at you... almost.

I have no idea what an official expansion might or might not encompass. But, I assume the developers will strive for a balanced level of challenge... which it seems they were doing when they limited the graviton shields for player VHFs to class-8.

Post Mon Apr 14, 2003 6:49 am

That seems sort of dumb... As you said, take two shields at the same level, Graviton and anything else, and the Grav will probably have higher armor rating. Because of that simple fact, I would venture to guess that Grav shields have some other drawback, like they suck against the more weaponry than the other types do. As long as they incorporated that kind of balance, it seems silly to limit those shields in the interest of balancing the game...

You can get Nomad Cannon and Blaster.

Need to goto Omicron Alpha and you will see a large circle of Outcast ships, in middle is a jump gate to a unknown area, this leads to Nomad space of a kind, just a Sun and no planets. Once you have taken out the 4 Nomad ships get back thru the gate and then you will face 4 more.

Keep doing this and you will at some point be able to get the cannons and blasters.

It took me about 15+ kills before I started to get any weapons.

Oh yes this is North (with a little move to the east) of the Omicron Theta jump gate.

North being top of Map
