wrecked ships

I have a question about the wrecked ships. Am I supposed to shoot them until the red bar goes down, then hope that a weapon drops? Just wondering because I shot a whole bunch and didn't get anything yet.

no, you only shoot it once. Even the weakest weapon will do. If you shoot them more, you risk destroying the cargo they drop. Most wrecks drop some sort of cargo, though certain wreck drop nothing.

If you're playing in MP mode, then probably someone before you has already taken the weapons/cargo that wreck had to offer (if it had anything to offer at all). In that case, you'll have to wait until the server is restarted, thereby resetting all the wrecks with their droppable cargo.
