Freaky Planet Rings...but wheres the planet?

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

there seem to be several of these planetless rings in different systems. Most of them are just remnants of planets which were removed, but the rings were forgotten and left in the game.

If you strip-mine a planet, wouldn't the ring dissipate over time due to loss of planet mass?

Although I think one of these "phantom rings" is in orbit of a decayed neutron star?

The missing link to the infamous Sunslayer torpedoes. There was a growing concern that ambitious freelancers will go on a sun killing spree, hence the torpedoes are "clipped" just before the game development entered the beta stage. The freaky planet rings are in fact remmants of a star that someone blew up, thus adversely affecting his reputation with a fellow co-worker who took great pains to put it there in the first place. The namesake was retained cos' it was too cool to be ignored.

It's a ring world. As in Niven's Ring World?

Actually you have stumbled upon the ingenious system for placing docking rings on planets. Due to the planets gravitational influence on the docking ring structure, the docking ring cannot be constructed near the intended plante. So a docking ring will be constructed somewhere along the planets orbit, but at a speed just slightly slower than the planet is orbiting. After construction is complete it is just a matter of time for the intended planet to catch up with the ring. The rings you have stumbled across are just such rings. These rings will be installed on their intended planets, most likely just after you stop playing FL. Hope this clears thing up, hehe. Have the drugs worn off yet?

mayb the planet has some sorta invisibility sheild

Post Mon Apr 07, 2003 2:03 pm

Hmm, came across two of those. First had an invisible planet, but I thought it was the same with others so I didn't bother asking. I remember it was near a prison base something, on whatever system towards Kusari from Liberty. The second had no planet, but a jump hole... near Omicron something or ... argh. Somewhere near the Siriu's bottom. I'm on Earth, so I don't care much about details, hehehe...
